MARA CONFIDENTIAL CONFIDENTIAL, 2 EHIJUN 2013/CPE523 QUESTION 1 (PO1, CO2, C2; PO1, CO2, C3; PO2, CO2, C4) Consider a fluid (of constant density p) in incompressible, laminar flow in a tube of circular cross section, inclined at an angle to the vertical as shown in Figure 1. End effects may be neglected because the tube length L is relatively very large compared to the tube radius R. The fluid flows under the influence of both a pressure difference Ap and gravity, Figure 1 Fluid flow in circular tube, a) List your postulate. (3 marks) b) Derive the expressions for the steady-state shear stress distribution and the velocity profile for a Newtonian fluid (of constant viscosity y) using equation of motion in Appendix 4 (14 marks) ¢) A Newtonian liquid has a kinematic viscosity of 8 x 10“ m/s and density 2 x 10°kg/m®. It is flowing through a 30° metal tube with 1.5 m long and 0.5 m inside diameter under a Pressure difference of 45 Nim’. Determine the maximum velocity of the liquid using velocity profile in part (a). State what is being transported and the driving potentials for each transport which are governed by these laws. (6 marks) b) Abheated sphere of diameter D is placed in a large amount of stagnant fluid. Consider the heat conduction in the fluid surrounding the sphere in the absence of convection as shown in Figure 2. The thermal conductivity k of the fluid may be considered constant. The temperature at the sphere surface is Te and the temperature far away from the sphere is Ts. ‘Temperature 7} Figure 2 Heated sphere in a large amount of stagnant fluid. ') List your postulate. (3 marks) ii) Establish an expression for the temperature T in the surrounding fluid as a function of r, the distance from the center of the sphere. The following reaction takes place at the solid surface: Nis) + 4CO(g) > Ni(CO).(g) The reaction is very rapid, so that the partial pressure of CO at the metal surface is essentially zero. The gases diffuse through a film with a thickness L = 0.072 cm. ’) Derive and estimate the rate of production of nickel carbonyl, in mole/s-cm? of solid surface at steady state. The composition of the bulk gas phase (z = 0) is 50 mol% CO. The binary diffusivity is Dys = 0.25 cm’/s, Given, R = 82,057 cm°.atm/molK. (8 marks) ii) Justify your assumptions. (6 marks) b) The Prandtl number usually remains fairly constant over a large concentration range while the Schmidt and Lewis number changes markedly. Justify this observation.
