Project Introduction and Purpose Paper
During the first semester I am going to be studying law. My project topic is the process of
divorce involving children and the establishment of permanent residency. I am able to do this
with the help of my mentor Kathleen McCumber. She specializes in family law and is also the
presiding judge of League City.
When I was about 8 or 9 my mom would always ask me what I wanted to be when I grew
up and my response was always the same. I wanted to become a lawyer and ever since then
nothing has been able to convince me to change my mind. The idea of helping people defend
their rights and beliefs while also carrying out justice is what excites me the most. It almost
seems destined that I was to be in some field of law. The past few years Ive been trying to
decide what kind of law to get into. There are many different fields of law to choose from, but
my primary reason for picking family law is because I want to see if this field is right for me in
the future.
The term family law is an umbrella for many cases which include divorce, child custody,
Child Protective Services, adoption, and domestic violence. The topic of divorce interests me
because it seems to be the norm now. Whether it be the couple feels like they are growing apart,
there isnt enough attention, or infidelity divorce is more common than it has ever been. This is

why I chose to do my project over the process of divorce involving children and the
establishment of permanent residency.
In order to carry out this project I am first starting with the statistics of divorce. Since
most of my project will be centered on statistics I have divided the topics up and have provided
relative deadlines for each. My research over what age couples have the highest divorce rate and
what factors affect marriage involving children will be done by the first nine weeks. Research
over the factors that a judge takes into account when establishing where a child will permanently
reside will be done by the beginning of the second nine weeks. How the hours and days for the
other parent works will also be researched and done by the beginning of the second nine weeks.
My product is going to be a fictitious case involving divorce with children and I will work on
this after all research is complete. The product will include a briefcase with papers regarding the
fictitious case.
In completing this project I hope to attain enough information to help me decide if family
law is something I want to pursue in the future.
