SESSION 5: SELF-ASSESSMENT

After completing the self-assessment I realized that my school community is very

healthy. For part one: health and safety I was able to answer yes on all but one question. Im not
sure if my school provides help to those who want to quit smoking because Ive never heard
anything about it, but Im sure they would if someone needed help. I feel like my school is a
safe physical environment and there is a guidance counselor and a nurse available for any health
and safety needs. There are emergency plans in place and they practice fire drills and
lockdowns.
For part two: nutrition and physical activity services my school scored a ten out of
twelve. Students are required to take one year of physical education, but I think it should be
more. If they take physical education their freshman year than that leaves three more years of
high school without it. I think they should be required to take at least two years. Sports and
clubs are very popular at my school so there are plenty of opportunities for physical activity. The
cafeteria is very clean but most students bring their lunch or go home or out to eat. I think some
of the foods that the cafeteria provides arent very healthy or low fat so I gave a zero for that
question.
The student that I interviewed was Branson Aaron who is a sophomore at Thatcher High
School. The total points for part three were fourteen, meaning he answered yes for every
question. He plays a sport after school so he is active almost every day. He also takes a weights
class during the day. He has a lot of school pride and his mom makes his lunch for school most
days so he usually makes healthy food choices. He said if he felt depressed or stressed he could
talk to a teacher he is close to or the school guidance counselor (B. Aaron, personal
communication, October 3, 2015).

SESSION 5: SELF-ASSESSMENT
In conclusion, I think this assessment shows that there is a healthy school community at
Thatcher High School. This is a great assessment tool that can be used to see where
improvements can be made to make a school healthier. It is important for a school to be a
healthy environment to promote learning for students.
