We dont often realize how important a community is to its surrounding schools. Most
people carry the belief that schools are provided to help support the community, and it is simply
not true. The school needs and thrives on the support from its community.
I was born on the East Coast, in North Carolina, and schools were a lot different there.
The families of the students attending the schools were so involved; we were able to do more
things that schools in Arizona arent able to do. Parents of students were always at the school
helping make costumes for upcoming plays, helping decorate for upcoming events, and helping
teachers with things they needed done around their classrooms. They even helped us to organize
parades and fund raisers to help our school.
My younger brother attends a school in the Gilbert district. He is involved in theatre and
says, sometimes its hard to get everything [building sets] done on time, it would help if we had
more hands to get it done (Winters, N. (2015. September 28.) Personal Interview. Arizona
communities seem to have a hands-off approach when it comes to their schools. Parents only
seem to get involved when they have a child who is falling behind, and sometimes not even then.
I think the community should help to create community events sponsored by the schools
in their area. The survey talks about a few different aspects of a school: health and safety,
nutrition and physical activity services, and my school engagement (McConnell, 2014, Pg. 388).
Most of the aspects on this survey are fulfilled by the school. However, I feel that a large part of
the survey is missing: community involvement. I think there should be part of the survey set
apart for community involvement because it is an important aspect to a well-run, thriving school.
I like the schools in Arizona and would like to help implement programs into schools that
get the surrounding community involved in their schools. I think that is the key they are missing
in their healthy school community.
