What Is CPS?
Child Protective Services
Department within DSS that deals solely with
the protection and wellbeing of children
under the age of 18.
The primary responsibility of CPS is to
receive, investigate, and respond to reports
of child abuse and neglect.
History
Before CPS
It wasnt until 1875 that the worlds first organization
devoted entirely to child protection came into
existence- the New York Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC).
Prior to 1875, many children went without protection*
Many officials and citizens felt that it was the parents
right to do whatever they felt necessary to their
children and the government should play no part.
History
CPS Today
CPS today is a bit more organized. When CPS
receives a new case the caseworker must draw
conclusions regarding the validity of the allegations,
the identity of the perpetrator, and the condition of
all the children in the home.
CPS works with a number of different agencies and
organizations to help the parents and the child
receive the help that they need so they can get to
the ultimate goal of reunification.
