Are twitter, Facebook, My Space and Texting newfound
Communication or a diversion from healthy face to face interaction?
If we consider this question from the point of view of non-profit organizations, it
becomes obvious with little analysis the twitter and Facebook etc. are newfound ways of communication. One obvious example is in the case of online education or MOOCs (Massive open online courses). Many world renowned universities are offering free online courses for anyone in the world. Edx is a recent non-profit organization built by MIT for offering online courses from world leading universities. When students are taking these online courses, they have great support of social media. They can ask any question from Professors, Community TAs and their fellow students if they dont understand any concept. Social Media is a very good platform for Organizations like Edx to promote their cause. Many Professors are very excited to be able to teach a class of millions of students from all over the world. In this case Social Media has become a newfound way of communication. If we consider this question from the point of view of Interpersonal and family relationships, social media has become a diversion from healthy face to face interaction. Most youngsters are addicted to online communities and their values have changed. They dont know the challenges of practical life and social causes of the problems. They just want to point out problems and comment on them. It has become a diversion from good family relations as well. They are just confined to online space only and give very less importance to their real friends. Some are even afraid of healthy face to face interaction.
