Department of Mechanical Engineering Qualifying Exam Written Problem ‘Thermodynamics May, 2005 CLOSED BOOK ‘A compressor driven water distillation plant is shown in the figure below. Impure water comes in at 1 bar and 50°C. It is heated by the internal heat exchanger to saturated steam, The vapor is then compressed by a vapor compressor adiabatically and reversibly. ‘The compressor output runs through the internal heat exchanger to provide energy for heating the incoming water and exits the purification plant as a compressed liquid at 100°C at essentially the same pressure as the compressor outlet. Assume that the impure water has the same thermodynamic properties as pure water, and that there is negligible heat transfer between the plant and the environment. For a water flow rate of 1 kg/s (a) (2pts) Identify the sources of irreversibilities of the plant. (b) (1 pt). Sketch the process on a T-s diagram, Clearly identify the states 1-4 (©) (S pts) What is the power required to run the compressor?
