    CarolinesGrandmothercanbeeasilyunderstoodasakindenjoyablecharacterinthis
    novelbutalsocanbestrictwhennecessary.InChapter9,Carolineisextremelydistraughtasher
    Grandmother,MizMelindy,hasjustexplainedtoCarolinethatwhatshepreviouslythoughtwas
    hermomwasnotherrealmother.Carolinestates,Then,ofasudden,IwasenvelopedinMiz
    Melindysarms,bawlingmyheartoutagainstherthinbosom,whilesheheldmeandstrokedmy

    Ontheotherhand,Caroline'sFatherisseeninthenovelasbeingtoughandalso
    thoughtless.AfterCarolinewascryingbecauseofthenewsofhermother,shesoonfindsoutthat
    herFatherhassoldherrealmotherinslavery.InChapter9,Carolineemotionallysays,My

    curiosity.Caroline'sDadiseasilyseenasbeingcruelandlesslikedbyreadersthanCarolines

    Readerscanlearnimportantthingsbythesetwocharactersinthenovel.SinceMiz
    MelindyismorethoughtfulandkindtowardsCarolinereaderscanlearnthatitisimportantin
    timesofneedtocareforthosethatonelovesmost.LearningfromthecruelactsofCaroline's
    fatherreaderscanunderstandtheimportanceofselfishnessandhownegativelyitaffectsothers.
