    gradualincreaseindivorceratesoverthelast10years.Sometimesthestressofadivorcemay
    tearafamilyapart,butnotalways.In
    CastTwoShadows
    ,AnnRinalditellsthestoryofabroken
    familyintheRevolutionaryWarperiod,andallthehardshipsthatcomethereof.Ifthereisone
    thingthatreaderscantakemostfromthisstoryitisthatbrokenfamiliesmaybehard,butthose
    thatloveeachotherandwhostandbyeachothergainhopeinlife.

    Thisnovelstressestheimportanceoflovingandcaringforthoseofafamilywhoare
    lovedmost.EventhoughCarolinesfatherwasmeanandcruelherGrandmother,MizMelindy,
    waskindandtenderbecauseshelovedCaroline.MizMelindywasmostlyacaringgrandmother
    butattimessheknewhowtobestrictandstubbornwhenCarolineneededitmost.Inreturn,
    manytimesCarolinewouldalsotakecareofherGrandmotherandshowlovetowardsherby
    helpingherintothewagon(132).CarolineandherGrandmothermadeafamilyandgaveeach
    otherhope.
    NotonlydidCaroline'sGrandmotherloveherandstickwithherbutinChapter21ofthe
    novel,Carolinesmotheralsolovesherandwantstobuildalifewithher,theyrunaway
    togetherleavingtheterriblememoriesbehind.Carolinerecalls,Mamalookeddisappointed,but
    shedidntargue.Wherethen?(257),hermamaasked!ThisquoteillustratesthatCaroline
    andhermomtrustedeachotherandthatthroughoutalltheirterriblehardshipstheywouldstick
    togetherandstayafamily.

    Readersofthisnovelmaycometotheconclusionthatfamiliesarereally
    important,thatmuchofCarolinessurvivalandthatofherfamilytookplacebecauseofthe
    lovingeffortsofeachother.ReaderscannotbesurehowtheoutcomewoulddifferifCaroline
    hadnooneandshewasallaloneintheworldduringthiswar,surelytheoutcomewouldmost
    likelybemuchworse.KindactswereexchangedbetweenCarolineandherGrandmother,love
    wasshownbetweenCarolineandhermother,theserelationshipsinherfamilygaveherhopeand
    sustainedherduringthishorribletime.
    Otherpointscanbeinferredfromthisnovelbutreadingcanattestthatfamilyisdefinitely
    asubjectthatwasstresseddeeplyinthenovel.Thedeepstorylineofthisnoveldevelopsfrom
    Caroline'sfamilyandtheircomplicatedinteractions.SomeofthoseinCarolinesfamilymade
    lifeverydifficultandchallengingforher,ButotherswholovedherhelpedCarolinepush
    throughthosehorribleRevolutionaryWartragedies.
