ANALYSIS OF THE RIVER RALJA WATER QUALITY
Abstract: Water quality of the river Ralja was researched from the spring to the confluence,
total length about 51 km-1. It was found that many users of river water and riparian areas ca
used the degradation of both avove-ground and underground water quality. There are nume
rous polluters, and users of water and soil for agricultural production in the drainage basin.
The application of pesticides and fertilisers in agricultural production cause excessive pollu
tion of both surface water and underground water. The unsolved communal infrastructure
leads to the outfl ow of communal wastewater into surface watercourses. Unprocessed waste
water from livestock farms and from small business firms and their facilities is discharged
into the tributaries and the main course of the the river Ralja. Emulgated substances from
petrol stations and car washing, communal solid waste, are just some of the polluters which
contaminate the water of the river Ralja in the hilly country of Serbia. The analysed sanples
of water, sediments and emulgated substances in the Ralja, indicate that the river is characte
rised by good natural capacity of self purification. Despite the evidently present point sources
of pollution throughout the drainage basin, water is evaluated between quality classes II - III.
Key words: water quality, polluters, physico-chemical analyses of water, emulgated substances

ANALYSIS OF THE RIER RALJA WATER QUALITY

Water quality of the river Ralja was researched from the spring to the confluence, total length
about 51 km. It was found that many users of river water and riparian areas caused the degradation
of both surface water and underground water quality. There are numerous polluters, and users of
water and soil for agricultural production in the drainage basin. The application of pesticides and
fertilisers in agricultural production cause excessive pollution of both surface water and undergro
und water. The unsolved communal infrastructure leads to the outfl ow of communal wastewater
into surface watercourses. Unprocessed wastewater from livestock farms and from small business
firms and their facilities is discharged into the tributaries and the main course of the the river Ralja.
Emulgated substances from petrol stations and car washing, communal solid waste, are just some of
the polluters which contaminate the water of the river Ralja in the hilly country of Serbia. To solve
this by all means great problem, it is necessary to educate the population at all levels on the signi
ficance of the environment and water quality for the survival ivot oveka. However, in addition to
good education, the problem can be solved by investing the financial means in capacity building for
the channeling and draining of communal wastewater to the plants for processing wastewater and
communal solid waste.
