Every day I hear the sound of drums

pounding their rhythms. It is as much
a part of the backdrop to Abene as
the chirrup of insects at night, or the
cries of "toubab" during the day.
Toubab is traditionally shouted by
children at white people. I usually
shout "African" back at them, for my
amusement and their bewilderment.
