Goals & Strategies for working on them

1. Attention gaining techniques

Strategies
Make a list of techniques and practice them in the classroom
Be aware of what works and what doesnt (make notes of this)
Types of attention gaining techniques:
a) call and response of a well known phrase (eg. T: Mary had a little lamb, S: Its fleece was
white as snow)
b) do something unexpected/humorous
c) Give me 5
d) music as a transition between subjects (eg. while they are cleaning up)
e) Hands on heads
f) Raise hand in air
g) 3-2-1 and quiet
h) use bells, triangle, whistle etc.
i) Hold hand in air and count down with fingers silently
j) echo clapping
k) use a timer (with a weird alarm sound)
l) students stay late for every minute wasted
m) clap once, clap twice, clap half

2. Setting clear expectations

- make sure students know where we are heading in the lesson
- have an clear idea of where the lesson is going to end
Strategies
Include end point category in lesson plans
State how the lesson is going to run at the start of the lesson
If students are completing a task:
- run through writing expectations (including spelling, format, length, sentences etc.)
- run through what is needed to complete the task successfully (perhaps create an
acronym, list etc. of what is needed)
- encourage students to be diligent in their own learning (so the task is not just completed
because the teacher said so)
- run through behavioural expectations (eg. silent work, working with table group etc.)
Be aware of differentiation: have certain expectations for NEP students
Have consequences for not meeting set expectations (NB: make sure expectations are realistic!)

3. Planning
- dont reinvent the wheel ~ find a good resource and then change it
- look at more available resources
- send plans to mentor earlier (aim for a DAY in advance)
Strategies
Make a timetable of when plans need to be worked on and hand up to Mentor Teacher (see next
page)
Use resource room, uni library more often (make photocopies of things that could be helpful)
Start a bank of extension activities sourced from available resources
Ask to look at Mentor Teachers older lesson plans

When to send of lesson plans to Renee (at the latest!)
