Assignment #4

Q.1) For a square wave inverter (Vdc=100 V, R=10 , L=25 mH, f=60 Hz), determine
the amplitudes of the Fourier series terms for the square wave load voltage, the
amplitudes of the Fourier series terms for load current, the power absorbed by the load,
and total harmonic distortion of load voltage and that of load current.

Q.2) A square-wave inverter has Vdc = 125 V, an output frequency of 60 Hz, and a
resistive load of 25 . What is the minimum load inductor value that will ensure that the
7th load harmonic current is reduced to a value that is 5% of the value that would appear
if the load was a pure resistor?

Q.3) A full-bridge inverter is used to produce a 60-Hz voltage across a series RL load
using bipolar PWM. The dc input to the bridge is 100 V, the amplitude modulation ratio
ma is 0.8, and the frequency modulation ratio mf is 21 [f tri = (21)(60) = 1260 Hz]. The
load has a resistance of R = 10 and series inductance L = 20 mH. Determine the
amplitude of the 60-Hz component of the output voltage and load current.

Q.4) In a full bridge inverter with unipolar PWM, the DC voltage Vdc = 300 V, the
amplitude modulation index ma = 0.8, the frequency modulation index mf = 38, and the
frequency modulating sine wave is fm = 47 Hz. Find
i) The rms value of fundamental component of output voltage.
ii) The rms value of the dominant harmonics, 2mf1, 2mf3.
iii) THD (consider four dominant harmonics only)

Q.5) In a three phase inverter, the DC voltage Vdc = 300 V, the amplitude modulation
index ma = 0.8, the frequency modulation index mf = 39, and the frequency of the three
phase modulating sine wave is 60 Hz. The load is a three phase Y-connected RL load, the
resistance is 10 and the inductance is 28 mH.
a) Determine the rms values of the output line-to-line voltage and line current at
fundamental frequency.
b) Calculate the rms values of two dominant harmonic voltages (line-to- line).
c) Calculate output power using only fundamental component.
