Literary Analysis
Genre: Information Book
Children of the Great Depression by Russell Freedman

Bibliographic Information
Freedman, R. (2005). Children of the Great Depression. New York: Clarion Books.
Plot
This book goes over what it was like for children during the great depression which
brought the roaring twenties to a close. It gives a great look at how bad the depression was and
the conditions were for people but in a way that it is more relatable to students.
Setting
The setting of this book is all over the United States during the Great Depression.

Theme
There is not real well-defined theme in this book it is simply about the information
pertaining to conditions children were in during the Great Depression.
Characters
As with most informational books there are not really any characters that are well defined but the
focus of this one is real children in the depression.
Style
The book is written very objectively with very little opinion in the text structure.
Point of View
This book is from the perspective of an all knowing narrator who is explaining the events
for children in the depression.
Reflections
I thought this book was really well done. It had a good amount of visual elements that
were also paired with text. I would suggest this for any class that is older than fourth grade
because of reading level but it would be a good way to make a great depression lesson more
personable to the student since that are children too.
