EXAMPLE 4.4 A section, SC 200, is used as a column in a building to support factored floor load 800 KN over a height of 5 m. It is required to support additional 50% extra load. Check whether the section has a capacity to resist expected load, if not, strengthen the section by means of flange plates. Take effective length factor k = 0.80, Jf, = 280 MPa. Solution Properties of section SC200: A a 7680 mm? h, = 200-2 37.35 = 125.3 mm. Buckling classification of section fib, = 200/200 =1 < 1.2 t= 15 mm < 100 mm Hence, for buckling @ zz axis use Class b and @ yy axis use Class c. Effective length = 0.8 x 5000 = 4000 mm. Slenderness ratio @ zz axis = 4000/84.8 = 47.17 @ yy axis = 4000/44.6 = 89.68 In this case, slenderness ratio @ yy axis is more than that @ zz axis and capacity of column is governed by slenderness ratio of 89.68. Referring to Table 9(c) pp. 48 for f, = 280 MPa: 80 145 90 127 For (KL/r) = 89.68: Seg = 127 + 0.32 x 18/10 = 127.576 N/mm? Capacity in compression = 7680 x 127.576 N =979.78kKN>800kKN OK Now the section is required to support additional load 50% of 800 kN. Load to be taken by section = 1200 KN > 979.78 KN Not safe} Therefore section requires strengthening. Load to be resisted beyond the capacity of section = 1200 - 979.78 KN = 220.22 KN Assuming fig = 120 N/mm?: Area by plates = Eee = 1835 mm? Area on each flange = 917.5 mm? Using plate of 10 mm thick: . 917.5 Width of plate required = 7" 91.75 mm Provide 150 mm x 10 mm plate by welding one on each flange of section SC 200, Classification of buckling for built-up section remains the same, as u< 40 mm. (KUN, = Seog = 43:97 4 (KL), = ~ = 9037 Referring to Table 9(c) for (KLr), = 90.37 and f, = 280: fog = 126.44 N/mm?. Capacity of built-up section = 10680 x 126.44 N = 1350.38 KN>1200kKN OK Welded connection Transverse shear to be considered for design of welded connection is 2.5% of axial load of column.
