Understanding
Appropriate Behavior and

Bullying is a widespread and serious


problem that can happen anywhere.
It is
not a phase children have to go
through,
it is not "just messing around", and it
is
not something to grow out of.
Bullying
can cause serious and lasting harm.
Bullying behavior:
1)

aggressive or intended to harm,


threaten, or embarrass;

2)

carried out repeatedly over time;


and

3)

occurs between two or more


people where a power imbalance
exists.
Bullying is
HURTFUL and
HARMFUL!

Types of Bullying
Physical
(e.g., hitting, shoving,
kicking)
Verbal
(e.g., name-calling, teasing)
Social
(e.g., spreading rumors,
breaking up friendships, or
leaving a child out on
purpose)
Cyber
(e.g., name-calling, rumorspreading, or aggressive
behavior/threats via
technology)

Consequences of
Bullying
Bullying can

interfere with a
students engagement
and learning in school;

physically and
emotionally harm a
student, his/her selfesteem, and his/her
health;

impact other students


who are simply
bystanders;

negatively affect the


climate of the school;

have long-term effects


on individuals.

How to Prevent
and/or
Stop Bullying
Behaviors
General Procedure:

Appropriately and
non-violently, speak
up!!! Use words or
phrases such as

Stop!
Quit it!

Use I messages.

Dont bully back !

TELL a trusted adult!

Bystanders:

Imagine how you


would feel if you
were being bullied.

Be a friend to
someone being
bullied! Your
kindness will make a
difference.

Dont join in with the


bully out of fear or
entertainment;
bullying is not funny.

Understand the
difference between
telling and

APPROPRIATE
BEHAVIOR
On school bus and
the lunch room
Always exhibit
appropriate
behaviors and
follow the rules .

Bullying is NOT
acceptable on
the bus or in the
lunch room.

To create school-wide conditions that dont


permit bullying to exist in the first place!

safe at school.
