5. What are the client and server roles required to support instant messaging?
Instant messaging (IM) is a type of online chat which offers real-time text transmission over the Internet. A LAN
messenger operates in a similar way over a local area network. Short messages are typically transmitted bidirectionally between two parties, when each user chooses to complete a thought and select "send". Some IM
applications can use push technology to provide real-time text, which transmits messages character by character,
as they are composed. More advanced instant messaging can add file transfer, clickable hyperlinks, Voice over IP,
or video chat.
6. What does VoIP stand for?
Voice over IP (VoIP) is a methodology and group of technologies for the delivery of voice
communications and multimedia sessions over Internet Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.
Other terms commonly associated with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, broadband
telephony, and broadband phone service.
7. What are the limitations of VoIP?
Not all VOIP services offer full integration with the current Enhanced 911 (or E-911) service.
Because a VOIP number can be physically located, some emergency services may not have
address information for a 911 call placed from a VOIP number. This is similar in many ways to 911
limitations on cell phones, when the exact location of the phone is not known. Some VOIP
providers now offer an option to associate a physical address with a phone number. That address
is transmitted to emergency services when a call to 911 is placed from the VOIP number.

Cost savings. The most attractive feature of VoIP is its cost-saving potential. When we move away
from public switched telephone networks, long-distance phone calls become inexpensive. Instead
of being processed across conventional commercial telecommunications line configurations, voice
traffic travels on the Internet or over private data network lines. For the enterprise, VoIP reduces
cost for equipment, lines, manpower, and maintenance. All of an organization's voice and data
traffic is integrated into one physical network, bypassing the need for separate PBX tie lines.
Although there is a significant initial setup cost, significant net savings can result from managing
only one network and not needing to sustain a legacy telephony system in an increasingly digital
and data-centered world. Also, the network administrator's burden may be lessened as they can
now focus on a single network. There is no longer a need for several teams to manage a data
network and another to manage a voice network. For consumers, VoIP reduces the charge of
subscription or usage, especially for long distance and international calls.
