DRUG DEPENDENCES
Drugs capable of altering mood and feeling are liable to repetitive use to derive euphoria,
withdrawal from reality, social adjustment, etc
Physiological dependence- individual believes the optimal state of well being is achieved
only through actions of drug
Physical dependence- repeated administration of a drug which necessities the
continuation presence of the drug to maintain physiological equilibrium.
Ex: opiods, barbiturates, alcohol, benzodiazepines, cocaine
DRUG ABUSE
Use of drug by self medication in a manner and amount that deviates from the approve
medical and social patterns
Drug addiction: overwhelming involvement with the use of drug
Ex: amphetamines, cocaine, cannabis, LSD
DRUS WITHDRAWAL REACTION
Producing dependence, sudden interruption, of therapy wirth certain other drugs also
results in adverse consequences, mostly in form of worsening clinical condition.
TERATOGENICITY
Capability of drug to cause foetal abnormalities when administrated to pregnant woman.
Placenta does not act as a barrier and drug can cross pass it.
Ex: anticancer drug, progestins, androgens, antithyroid drug, aspirin, warfarin,
tetracyclins
DRUG INDUCES DISEASE
Also called iatrogenic( physician inducea) disease and are functional
disturbances(dsease) cause by drugs persist even after offending drug has been withdrawn
and largely eliminated.
