Persuasive Letter Writing – All Groups

Your task this week, is to write a persuasive letter of complaint. This should be addressed to the
travel agency you used, to book the holiday you have just returned from. You are complaining
because the holiday was one of the worst you have been on and you hold them responsible.
Did they mislead you? Did you encounter problems on the holiday that you feel were their fault?
Remember your structure. Paragraph 1 state why you are writing; Paragraph 2+ elaborate on the
issues; Final Paragraph explain what it is you believe should
happen next (your wishes).
Some techniques:
Tell your reader what he would like to hear.
Use flattery Make the reader feel sorry for you.
Distort the facts (keep it subtle)
Blind the reader with science. Fancy formulas and technical
terms work well.
Use emotive or biased vocabulary rather than straightforward
words
Quote statistics and use them to mean what you want them to
mean.
Use the words "surely", "obviously" and "of course".
Make an emotional appeal to your reader. Animals and children always appeal.
Remember the four ‘enoughs’. Is your letter…strong enough, formal enough, polite enough and
persuasive enough?
