Claudia

WANTED: What did the


main character want?

She wanted to understand why the prototype of blonde


hair and perfect blue eyes was described as beautiful.

BUT: What was the


conflict (problem)?

That everyone identified perfection and beauty as blonde


hair, pale skin, and light eyes. Completely different to her
family and race, but she still saw beauty in the people
around.

conflict (problem)?

NONE

resolution to the story?

SUMMARY: Claudia didnt understand why everyone glorified white people, perfect people,
with perfect pale skin, perfect blonde hair, and perfect blue eyes. Even people that were like
her with chocolate skin. She didnt see why she wasnt beautiful. She didnt understand what
made them beautiful that she didnt have. She didnt think that Shirley Temple was beautiful
and perfect, she didnt like her at all, unlike her sister and Pecola, Pecola recently moved in
with them as her family went outdoors after his father was recently confined in prison, now
she was living with Claudias family.

WANTED: What did the


main character want?

For her mother not to fight, not to enrage her father. She
wants to disappear, she doesn't want to belong to her
family.

conflict (problem)?

Her mother always did it, her parents always fought. But
there wasnt anyway for her to escape she was tied down
by youth and fear of herself.

character solve the
conflict (problem)?

She shut down, she wished for her death, she prayed to
God to make her disappear.

Pecola found refuge with her neighbors, three women, they


were feared by most ladie sin the town, their profession
was feared, but for the most they were lovely to Pecola and
brought a little joy to her shaden life.

SUMMARY: Mrs Breedlove, Pecolas mother had one of her usual fights with Cholly,
Pecolas father, the fight frightening. Anyways there wasnt anyway for her to escape
them or to flee she was tied down by youth and fear. So instead what she did was shut
down she enclosed in herself and convinced herself of how horrible of a life she had
and how ugly and unfortunate she was, she prayed for her own death and
disappearance in this way she avoided the family conflict she feared, but was used to.

character?

Claudia

WANTED: What did


the main character
want?

She wanted to have all Maureen Peal, but more than anything
she probably wanted to be her friend even though she knew it
was risky friendship.

BUT: What was the


conflict (problem)?

Maureen Peal was a high-yellow dream child with long brown


hair, quality of her clothes, patent-leather shoes, sweaters the
color of lemon drops, skirts with pleats so orderly they
astounded her, bright colored knee socks with white borders, a
brown velvet coat trimmed in white rabbit fur. She was nothing
like Claudia and her sister, Frieda.

conflict (problem)?

Frieda and Claudia looked for flaws in Maureen, they made up


names and made fun of the the dog tooth she had, and the
bump in her hand that was where her sixth finger once had
been.

the resolution to the
story? (Afterwards)

One day Maureen walked with them home, Pecola came along,
Maureen showed interest in the fact that Pecola had seen her
father naked or not. Then Claudia really saw all the bad that
was behind that pretty face and that there werent any good
intentions.

SUMMARY: At the beginning of the winter this new girl arrived to Claudias school, Maureen
Peal was a high-yellow dream child with long brown hair, quality clothes, patent-leather shoes,
sweaters the color of lemon drops, skirts with pleats so orderly they astounded her, bright
colored knee socks with white borders, a brown velvet coat trimmed in white rabbit fur. She
was nothing like Claudia thats why Claudia and her sister, Frieda despised her, they tried to
find any kind of flaw in her from her supposive dog-tooth to her sixth finger. One day this girl
showed special interest in being friendly to Claudia, so she walked along with the two sisters
home, on their way they stopped some boys from bullying Pecola, later Pecola joined them.
From there on things got weird because MAureen started asking things that made Pecola and
the others uncomfortable, thats how Claudia and Frieda saw all there was to despise about

that filthy rich girl.

the main character?

Louis Junior

WANTED: What did


the main character
want?

He wanted to be a mean and loud kid, he wanted to play with


the black boys, to be messy.

BUT: What was the


conflict (problem)?

His mother Geraldine, was the type of woman that kept


everything in place, wouldnt allow anything that wasnt
ironed and clean. Therefore Junior knew, even though his
mother didnt talk to him much, he knew she wouldnt allow
it.

SO: How did the


character solve the
conflict (problem)?
(Afterwards)

One day this girl, Pecola was walking across the park that
Junior kept watch on in his free time. He told her to come in,
he convinced her by telling her than he had some kittens
inside. Then Junior held her prisoner in a room. In an
attempt to escape Pecola and Junior threw Geraldines cat.

THEN: What was the


resolution to the story?

When Geraldine got home she saw what had happened and
that her beloved cat was dead. She yelled to Pecola and told
her to leave.

SUMMARY: The chapter starts describing Geraldines family and how Louis Junior, her son
lives by her rules, but inside he wants to be friends with the black kids and be mean to girls
and to kick them. This one day he pursues Pecola to walk into his house, he told her to come
in to see some kittens then he locked her in the house, exasperated she fought him off, the
result was harming the house cat. At the very end Geraldine gets home and sees the chaos
that is happening.

Pauline Williams

WANTED: What did the


main character want?

She wanted to have a man that loved her, to be pretty and


happy and have that perfect white life

BUT: What was the


conflict (problem)?

Her life circumstances, she blamed it all in her foot even


though she recognizes that if it is anyones fault it is her
tooths. She settles for being ugly she completely accepts.

SO: How did the


character solve the
conflict (problem)?

She settled for her unhappy life, her drunk husband, and
her ugly children. Her only joy was her work, cleaning and
putting things in place.

THEN: What was the


resolution to the story?

NONE

SUMMARY: Pauline Williams married young to Cholly Breedlove, they moved to Lorain Ohio.
She was a happy wife that spent the days in her two-room flat where she couldnt even talk to
the cat. With time her husband got bored with her and started drinking due to lonesome and
her unhappy marriage she started working, then Cholly ruined that too. Later her front tooth
fell off this was when she gave up on being pretty. Later she had two kids: Sammy and
Pecola. This brought joy for a while, but it soon went to back to normal. Each day going by
she was unhappier she resorted to the church and to her work where she could live in the
perfect home with porcelain bathtubs and sweep the deep red tapestry.

main character?

Charles (Cholly) Breedlove

WANTED: What did the


main character want?

He wanted that putrid freedom he had when he walked


down the southern streets and did anything he liked, he
worked where we wanted and lived where he desired.

BUT: What was the


conflict (problem)?

He was drawn back by his unfulfilled childhood, and his


lonesome. Once he settled for a life he got bored, he got
bored about only with Pauline.

SO: How did the


character solve the
conflict (problem)?

He resorted to anger and confusion, he got drunk and


went home and fought with his wife and did nothing as a
father.

THEN: What was the


resolution to the story?

NONE

SUMMARY: Chollys mother abandoned him when he was only a baby, so his mothers aunt
took care of him but she was an old woman so she died when Cholly was fourteen. Then he
chose to flee and go look for his forgotten father, when he found him his father didnt even
recognize him. From their on he took on the easy life having no regard to responsibility or
stability. He married Pauline Williams and he was happy for a while, but later he got bored of
living in one place and being with one woman so he resorted to drinking and coming home
late. At the end of the chapter he comes home drunk and molests Pecola.

CHAPTER # 7 PAGE # 165-183


SOMEBODY: Who is the Soaphead Church
main character?
WANTED: What did the
main character want?

He craved a simple life, a life of celibacy, where he didnt


have to undergo any kind of physical contact with any
other human being. The only human beings he liked were
little girls.

BUT: What was the


conflict (problem)?

He couldnt really peace out because he felt guilty for


faking his godly powers all his life, for faking the power of
god on his shoulders.

SO: How did the


character solve the
conflict (problem)?

He really didnt solve it, he decided to write a letter to God,


asking him one innocent favor, to help this girl the truly
deserved his aid, but due to how pure her wish was he
couldnt help her.

THEN: What was the


resolution to the story?

NONE

SUMMARY: Soaphead Church, was a weird man that despised other people. He had arrived
to the United States after jumping from profession to profession. He held his business in
Lorain, Ohio, he helped people with wishes, and foretelling. He said that he had some kind of
godly power, but he simply was a clever odd guy that knew very well how to control people.
He only took pleasure from little girls, these creatures were the only one he didnt despise.
One day this little black girl came along to his establishment for him to grant her one wish,
blue eyes. There he felt angry, guilty, confused, a sea of emotions, because he couldnt help
the little girl. The little girl what a pure innocent wish, she wanted to be pretty to see the world
through that face everyone called beautiful. Soaphead anyways found a way to give the little
girl blue eyes, a pair blue eyes she could only see.

CHAPTER # 8 PAGE # 183-205


SOMEBODY: Who is the
main character?

Pecola

WANTED: What did the


main character want?

She wanted the bluest eyes.

BUT: What was the conflict


(problem)?

Only she and her imagination could see the beautiful


blue eyes, everyone else only saw a twelve year old
child that was pregnant with her fathers baby

SO: How did the character


solve the conflict
(problem)?

She didnt, she just went crazy. She kept dreaming about
her bluest eyes.

THEN: What was the


resolution to the story?

There wasnt really a resolution she just kept living on


that far off world where she had the bluest eyes

SUMMARY: Claudia and Frieda found out about Pecola being pregnant, and they heard how
everyone was demeaning her and talking badly about Pecola, mostly how everyone wanted to
see the unborn baby already dead, so they decided to make a sacrifice for Pecola, anyways it
didnt work. Pecola went on crazier and crazier with the blue eyes shed been gifted with, or
so she thought, she kept going on and on asking this mysterious friend if her eyes were the
bluest, it just seemed like she was losing it. Pecola lived on the rest of her days lost in her
head with her blue eyes, people and children feared her. Claudia and Pecola never went near
her, not because they feared her, but because theyd failed them.
