Identifying Adverbs

Adverbs can be used to modify adjectives, verbs or other adverbs. They


often end with -ly and appear right before the words they modify.
Examples:
The cold weather made the birds fly south.
The adverb south modifies the verb fly to tell us where the birds flew.
The cabin was cold because the fire was barely hot.
Barely is an adverb that tells us that the fire wasnt hot (an adjective) enough to
warm the cabin.
Eat your broccoli right now!
Now is a when adverb that states when the broccoli should be eaten. Adding an
additional adverb, right, adds emphasis to the other adverb, now.
