Interculturalism and Multiculturalism
in German Medieval Literature
Summary
Cultural contacts can be highly stimulating for literary production, enriching
literature and providing new creative impulses. In regard to German medieval literature, its supreme achievements came about as the result of encounters with other
European cultures, predominantly with the ancient Greek and Roman culture and
medieval French culture, but also with the Celtic and Oriental cultures through the
mediation of Latin and French literature. Important roles in this process were played
by dynastic relations, travelling patrons, writers and manuscripts, as well as feasts
or even the Crusades, since all of them offered various opportunities for cultural
exchange. Well-educated ladies were mostly the ones who initiated and valued the
translations of literary works, especially after their marriage and moving into a foreign country.
This paper offers an overview of the medieval literary production in Germany
under influence of Latin and Romance literatures, in order to point out the stimulating and enriching role of contacts with other cultures and the interculturalism
and multiculturalism of the German mediaeval literature. In the early Middle Ages,
clerics were writing religious literature in Latin, but they also recorded authentic
German heroic poetry (Das Hildebrandslied) or translated it into Latin (Waltharius),
playing a crucial role in preserving from oblivion those literary works that existed
only in oral tradition for centuries. They also stimulated creating new religious literature, Bible poetry, legends etc. in German, in order to facilitate understanding of
Latin texts for their students. Although they attempted to link the Germanic tradition
with Christianity, they never succeeded completely, since the differences were too
distinctive. Therefore, early mediaeval German culture can be regarded as multicultural.
The second main influence on German medieval literature came from Romance
literatures, particularly from Anglo-Norman and Occitan literature. Translating from
French and Provencal languages, German authors imported new genres and subjects
into German literature (courtly love romance, Arthurian romance, ancient Greek
and Latin epics and novels), thus contributing to its innovation. The Anglo-Norman
literature acquired elements from Celtic literature, which became an inseparable
part of many French medieval works. German culture was open to all those various
cultural influences, constituting the European medieval culture.
Elements from Oriental culture were imported via Latin and French literature,
and are present in Wolframs Parzival, as well as in the novel about Alexander, in
legends of Salman and Marolf, and in the love romance about Floire and Blancheflor. In all those cases, the Oriental elements were obvious in the material and motifs,
but not in form and genre. Besides, they were all abstracted from a non-Christian religion, since Christianity was the common base on which the entire medieval courtly
literature was built. The intertextuality of German medieval literature was possible
only because of the existence of religion as a cohesive element. Therefore, authentic
Germanic literature could not ever become a part of the (inter)cultural amalgam created in the Middle Ages.
Due to manifold contacts, the highlight of German medieval literature at the
turn of the 13th century has been regarded as the first classical period in the history of
German literature. Taking into account the impact of the European cultural contacts

on this literature, the conclusion imposes itself that without cultural contacts there
would be no German medieval literature at all, or at least not in form in which we
know it today, as a multicultural and intercultural literature, unique in the history of
German culture.

Intertextuality, the Market and Consumer Society
in Thackerays Novel Vanity Fair
Summary
The paper analyzes the impact of the Victorian Age culture on Thackerays
novel Vanity Fair. Realistic representation of new social relationships within the
fictional world of the novel plausibly reveals the mechanisms of power and domination in the context of the Victorian Age. The Victorian morality as an acceptable
cultural model of thinking and comportment, the laws of the market and the logic of
the consumer society make up the constitutive parts of this fictional world of Vanity
Fair. These intertextual connections reveal how the novel interprets history, social
relationships and moral norms. Thackeray shows the commerces dependence on
high politics and the dependence of an individual on economic changes and events.
The aspiration for the possession of money motivates the actions of the novels
characters. Marriage, as one of the social and economic categories, represents one
of the ways to obtain ones social goals as well as a simultaneous response to the
demands of the society. Thackerays ironic, parodist, and satirical narration reveals
some less noticeable aspects of Victorian culture. Intertextual connections between
the novel, history and Victorian society establish a creative dialogue, even with different forms of reality.

Summary
Based on the out-dated concept of equivalence, shifts in meaning in translation were long considered to be errors or deviations from the norm. Starting from
Leuven-Zwarts statement that shifts in fact are only natural representing the norm
itself, the paper explores the nature of shifts occurring in the Serbian translations
of language varieties in Tennessee Williamss play A Streetcar Named Desire. The
multidisciplinary approach taken implies stylistic translational analysis based on
Gutts pragmatic concept of style in translation as communicative clues which lead
to an interpretation, combining it with Hatim and Masons model of language variation suitable for dramatic discourse. The analysis is aimed to show that an author
and his/her work unavoidably undergo transformation in a different language and
culture, thus opening space for new research and interpretations and proving that
translational analysis of literature has an important place in this context. In an attempt to summarize the results of the analysis, it can be stated that shifts have proven
to be inevitable in the translation of Williamss language varieties for a number of
reasons, ranging from the translators individual reading, through cultural and social
differences, to the prevailing norms. These reasons led the translators to avoid the
use of the phonological representation of speech and grammatically incorrect forms,
two very frequent features of the speech of Williamss characters which, coupled
with lexical nuances, greatly contribute to characterization and speech variation, and
instead employ other means of speech differentiation, primarily relying on the lexis.
However, while more or less managing to convey the desired effect of contrast, the
inevitable shifts on the microstructural formal level have also caused shifts on the
macrostructural level, particularly in terms of connotations in the areas of characterization and relations between characters. Furthermore, due to these unavoidable
shifts, the language of Williamss characters in Serbian translations does not show as
great variety and diversity as is the case with the original text characterized by subtle
gradations. The upshot of all this is that the author and his work naturally emerge
in a different guise, with the norms of the target language and culture playing an
important role in this process.

Intertextuality of The Lost Ones: Becketts Dialogue with Dante,
Lamartine, Plato, and Voltaire
Summary
This comparative study analyzes the intertextual connections between Samuel
Becketts short prose and the works of Dante Alighieri, Alphonse de Lamartine,
Voltaire, and Plato. The paper is focused on the quotations from The Divine Comedy, The Poetic Meditations, Candide, and The Symposium, which are present in
Becketts late story entitled The Lost Ones (Le Dpeupleur). Based on Grard Genettes analysis of intertextuality, paratextuality, and other forms of transtextuality,
this study interprets how Beckett describes a strange cylindrical world, inhabited by
lonely creatures that are searching for their lost ones: by creating an ironic distance
from the visions of love represented in the works of Dante, Lamartine, Plato, and
Voltaire. In addition to offering a detailed analysis of the allusions and other forms
of intertextual relations, the paper points to the differences between the paratextuality of the French version of Becketts story entitled Le Dpeupleur and the paratextuality of its later English version entitled The Lost Ones.

The city as a postmodern cultural form manifests itself as several interlaced

layers which facilitate processes of communication and interpretation. This matrix
may at certain points most vividly project elements which would speak of the city as
of an industrial machine, or those which would generate a version of its own reality
through sequences of ones and zeroes within screens of liquid crystal. However, in
the symbolic domain, the city simultaneously also emits messages which are not always clearly defined, messages that belong to history, heritage, the mythic deposited in the citys own history and in the histories of all the cities since the beginning
of time. This paper examines the city as a system of communication and as a symbol

of Western civilization and its interaction with its inhabitants as active participants
in the process of creation and interpretation of urban culture, through the analysis
of two novels by the contemporary American writer Don DeLillo, Underworld and
Cosmopolis. The paper highlights some of the most relevant interpretations of postmodern criticism related to the phenomenon of urbanity and its transformations, as
well as the conflict between the mythic and the urban, particularly in the symbolism
of the labyrinth. Through the analyses of the novels and through its intertextual links
with other literary works which incorporate mythic into the contemporary the poetry of Zbigniew Herbert, a story by J.L. Borges, The House of Asterion (La casa
de Asterin), and Victor Pelevins novel Helmet of Horrors ( ) one
of the goals of this paper is to accentuate the myths power of transformation within
the mediated structures of contemporary postmodern culture.

Summary
By analysing literary characters, as agents of thematic, motivational and ideational function of the literary work, the paper will attempt to shed light on the juxtapositions love/passion, life/death, young/old, fact/fiction, which represent the inside
and the outside of all relations among characters, and which, at deeper semantic
structures, enable the recognition of the assumed role the mask, and the substance
lying beneath it. Special attention will be paid to the phenomena of beauty and
shame, which take on their own meaning in the textual tissue of Milo Crnjanskis
play. The pre-Easter atmosphere the period of Shrovetide games is observed
through the prism of the carnival, and inevitably implies the excess of vital energy,
and it is within this framework that we will analyse the specific, outrageously sumptuous theatrical metaphors which use a wide range of images such as dance, play and
masquerade. Crnjanski stylizes his characters as decadent passionate people, while
the language he employs is decoratively picturesque, reflecting the horror induced
by the common speech of common life. The dominant topic of this poetic comedy eroticism ironically put forward and introduced with the aim of unmasking
the cult of female sexuality and the image of the glitter of nobility suggestively alludes to the world lacking substance effected by the motives of transcendence and
illusion.

Summary
Branko Miljkovis critical texts Poetry for Children and Sensitive Persons
(Poezija za decu i osetljive, 1955), Poetry for Children (Poezija za decu,
1956) and If Trees Could Walk (Kad bi drvee hodalo, 1959), are discussed in
the context of a poetic identification and the critical reception of childrens poetry
in the 1950s, as well as in the context of his (auto)poetic reflections. Although he
never systematically pursued the ontology of the childrens poem, Miljkovi hinted
at it in his texts about French poetry and Grigor Vitezs collection of poems. His attitude towards poetry for children, as poetry in its most universal sense, concerning
the general relativization of reception boundaries and the delineation of immanent
poetic characteristics (naivet, lyricism, musicality, rhythm, playfulness, humour,
irony, sensibility, anthropomorphisation), functionality (both aesthetic and educational) and the question of its evaluation live on as part of relevant appraisals of
this poetic expression.

This paper analyses the unusual viewpoint and the cyclical composition of
Milovan Danojlis novel Godina prolazi kroz avliju (The Year Passes Through
the Courtyard). The entire narrative space of this novel is limited by the title itself although the broadly conceived temporal level leads to the characteristic
chronicle structure, this work can equally be considered a singular novel of space.
The place that the Boy inhabits and lives in is a space that essentially determines
him, and it represents a village avlija (courtyard), a corner of the Earth where the
collective life and personal, internal and exceptionally intimate awareness of the
world and the people in it intersect. The novel achieves its chronicle-like character
by the mediatory position of the narrator, as well as the attempt to encompass a
fraction of his childhoods time. The year appears as a singular temporal boundary
marker in this book, a way to comprehend something elusive, which expresses, to

The Truth of a Child: Romantic Critique
of the Enlightenment Vision of Growing Up
Summary
The work primarily detects and exposes rival models of understanding of
growing up. In the rationalist tradition of the Enlightenment, marks and criteria of
the successfulness of maturation are the independence of thought, gaining advanced
and finally complete autonomy. Maturation is, especially in Kant, interwoven with
the pathos of freedom, resistance to tutors and every patronage, but also with pointing out the responsibility, legality and purposefulness of the freedom that equally
resists enthusiastic enticement and the rhapsodic craze.
It is different, however, with the romantic and religious visions of growing up.
Being an adult here means exactly to overcome childrens diseases, to eradicate
the sound and the fury, to cure oneself from selfishness. Maturation is nothing
but a deviation from the illusion of self-sufficiency and self-creation and conciliation with the insight that we are determined by units that rise above us. Those units,
much older, more fundamental and more important than us, are the structures we are
inexorably woven into and structures that primarily define us. Growing up means
gaining awareness about the respect that we owe to entities we inevitably depend on,
which enables and constitutes us, rather than defying it.
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, this orientation had its
significant representatives. Hamans evocation of the Gospel image of maturity as
sacred innocence is followed by the romantic redivinisation of sourcefulness, the affirmation of innocence, joy, and the focus and investment in the image of the child.
Wordsworth, Blake and Shelley on the island side, and Friedrich Schlegel, Novalis and Schleiermacher, while articulating and profiling German Romanticism,
celebrate childhood (and traits they attributed to it) in their writings. Immediacy, innocence, joy, personified in the image of the child, become keywords that oppose
the methodical and graduate ascent, chain of argumentation, endless mediations, and
old-age-seriousness of the philosophy of the Enlightenment. The research passion of
the prudent adult who self-legislatively and responsibly builds him/herself through
his/her own history, gives way to the existence of compelling self-sufficiency of
childhood. Such an existence is not becoming, and such self-sufficiency is not only
a possibility, but is itself a complete realization of the self.
Through the motif of the truth of the child, characteristic for at least one
major stream of the movement, romanticism thus openly rebels against the truth
of the adult autonomous subject, which Enlightenment declared as its aim and password. The uprising, as befitting, is not expressed by means of scientific or philosophical elaboration, but by poetic images, imagination and unfettered textual play.
Therefore, however, it is not less coherent within itself, nor with less claims to the
validity of its concept of growing up. In any case, the Enlightenment vision of childhood as a self-evident point of resistance, as well as addressee of the call to come out
of immaturity, even in Kants and, especially, in Coleridges time, is challenged with
an image according to which self-legislative exit from the minority and enlightened
rational order are not desirable notions of the state in which the already suspected
rebellion against all tutors ends. The Child is a symbol warning and therefore at
least an instructive corrective of the hypertrophied rationality.

Verticals of Epic Characters
Summary
This paper examines various types of paradigmatic series of characters in epic
poetry. Vertical sets are formed i.e. by characters from different poems connected by
the same scope, function or syuzhet position. The hierarchic layering of each such
set is conditioned by the depth structure of individual syuzhet models. The selection
of epic characters included into a vertical series is limited by horizontal (syntagmatic) connections established between the characters in a single poem (customary
couples, triades) and the naming (national or ethnic isomorphy, typical names). Paradigmatic relations subsume implicit connections as well, i.e. associative inclusion
of absent characters in a certain series.

Summary
The paper describes the handwritten periodical Rovovac, a comic periodical
from the trenches, written by Stanislav Krakov during the Battle of Kaymakchalan
and preserved in the National Library of Serbia. Similar to its author, Rovovac appears to be unrestrained, dishevelled, jocular, ordinary. However, when we delve a
little deeper into its secrets, we begin to discover its subtlety, beauty, mystery, complexity. In order to understand Rovovac better, we have to decipher it in many written reminders of the Great War, and not limit ourselves to merely reading its pages.

The Life and Death of Branko Ve Poljanski
Summary
In our paper, we use the facts from the interview with Stphane Polianski, the
son of Branko Ve Poljanski, as an authentic testimony about the last years of his
fathers life. The mystery about Poljanskis death is finally solved: he died near Fontainebleau on January 14th, 1947. Branko dedicated the last two decades of his life in
France, between 1927 and 1947, to painting and forming a family. He was married to
Rene Delattre, and had four children with her. His sudden death from cardiac arrest
cut short his life in his prime. In France, he established contacts with well-known
artists: Cline Arnauld, Paul Derme, Andr Salmon, Marcel Sauvage, Tristan Tzara,
even Picasso, and he held several art exhibitions in Parisian galleries.

Oarani Crnjanski
U zbirci pesama Lirika Itake je i provokativna, pornografska,
skandalozna pesma Reljef sa likom Dantea posveena Anici Savievoj. Anica i Crnjanski esto su zajedno, kreu se u drutvu pisaca
oko asopisa Dan.
U oktobru 1919. Crnjanski se udvara Anici Savi:
Nisam iskao dozvolu da Vam mogu pisati, jer bi me bilo stid ikad
da molim, ali ja Vas isuvie potujem, biete to ve primetili, a da bi
smelo da Vam bude neprijatno to lako krim obeanje.
Vi se ni sad neete uditi, ako Vam dolazim sa molbom da mi
date asak dva vaeg vremena to e te ga u Beogradu provesti van
vaeg kozmosa, jer va razgovor, svi Vi, isuvie ste fina za jedno
zalee svakidanje, salonsko i banalno. Radovao bih se kada bi mi
dopustili da sa Vama sa Kalemegdana pogledam na daleke ume.
Vie godina ste za mene jedna pesnikinja koja zna vie nego iko od
kad je Dante umro o nebu a sada Vas poznajem i tiha mirna linija
vaeg govora, misli, pokreta ovija se oko mene i daje mi iluziju da
sve to iz daljine gledam prilazi.
Sve ovo Vam rekoh samo zato da znate da Vam se niko tako
duboko ne klanja kao Crnjanski
