Task
You are required to research 3 people that belong to a religion and are openly religious. These
people must identify with a particular religion and they may be in the public eye OR somebody you
know personally. When choosing these people you must consider their:

Religious participation
Religious observance
Religious identity

Person 1 Must be a Catholic.

Person 2 Must be Christian (any denomination).
Person 3 Must follow any of the major religions. (Islam, Buddhism, Hindu and Judaism).

You must use this booklet for your research and answer the questions accordingly. These
questions will help you to develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be religious. Then
you are to create a web page using your research and knowledge of your chosen people. You can
do this using weebly:
www.weebly.com

Once finished you are to send the link for your web page to your teacher and hand in the research
booklet on the due date.

Research Notes

Person 1 (Catholic): Saint Francis of Assisi

Background
What is this persons personal background? Where are they from? What is their occupation?
What are their religious beliefs? Give examples and quotes if possible.

Born in Italy and now the Patron Saint of Italy, Saint Francis was the son of a wealthy
fabric trader in Italy, and so was part of the elite of Italy. When he was in his pre-teen age,
he saw a beggar asking for alms. Where his friends made fun of and laughed at the
beggar, Francis gave the beggar money and some clothes- a considerable amount. When
his father heard of this, he chided Francis. Francis then served in the military but was
then captured by the enemy, when he had a vision. After this, he subsequently came to
be a great name in his time for those who thought of the religious way of life.

Religious participation
How does this person demonstrate their participation in their religion?
How frequently does this person practise elements of a religious way of life? How do they do
this?

Saint Francis of Assisi was Roman Catholic and was regularly practising. Although he
was not of the clergy, he was still one who deeply believed in the teachings of the Holy
Trinity and was also rather skilled at professing these teachings to those he met.

Religious observance
How does religion affect the person?
How do they live out their faith in their daily lives?

Religion affected his life in such a way that he committed his whole life to it because of
his visions and also of his philosophies.

Religious identity
How did this person come to identify with this religion?
Is their choice of religion a result of age, family or ethnicity? And if so how?

Saint Francis was always of Catholic belief, but until his visions, he was not an extreme
believer. His interactions with the Holy Spirit in his visions and for the rest of his life
made him the believer that we know him as today.

Person 2 (Christian): Martin Luther King Jr.

Background
What is this persons personal background? Where are they from? What is their occupation?

What are their religious beliefs? Give examples and quotes if possible.

Born in 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, Martin Luther King Jr., was a pastor for a Baptist
Church. He spoke frequently in his sermons of Jesus' teachings, such as the Two Great
Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount. King often performed non-violent
protests to create a medium to ensure that the civil rights movements among others were
being placed into focus. King strived to live as God wanted all to live: with love for all
brothers and sisters.

Religious participation
How does this person demonstrate their participation in their religion?
How frequently does this person practise elements of a religious way of life? How do they do
this?

In 1954, when he was 25, he became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church,
which as is stated in the name, is of Baptist denomination (Christian deviant). He spoke
in his sermons about Jesus' Two Great Commandments, mostly the love your neighbour
as yourself commandment. Formed Southern Catholic Leadership Conference (SCLC)
and acted as the first president, forming protests to fight against racial segregation.
Throughout his life, King was involved in acts which promoted the need to act as Jesus
showed and to ultimately achieve universal equality and love for each other.

Religious observance
How does religion affect the person?
How do they live out their faith in their daily lives?

Martin Luther King Jr. was of Baptist affiliation, which is a deviant of the Christian
religion. Baptists believe in Baptism only being allowed for those who consciously
choose to become Baptist and that infants cannot be baptised, as well as complete
immersion into blessed water, rather than the sprinkling or partial immersion of the
forehead. He referred to his religious roots throughout his push for racial equality, using
his sermons and connections to spread his message of love and peace

Religious identity
How did this person come to identify with this religion?
Is their choice of religion a result of age, family or ethnicity? And if so how?

King identified as a Baptist, and was most likely a Baptist because of his locale and his
life influences as he was being raised. The majority of African-Americans in the area at
that time were most notably of Baptist belief. Also, Baptists and most mainstream
Christian denominations have all the same theistic beliefs and so King was probably
drawn to Christianity in general, with Baptist being the only major source in his life whilst
being raised.

Person 3 (Other religion): Mahatma Ghandi (Hinduism)

Background
What is this persons personal background? Where are they from? What is their occupation?
What are their religious beliefs? Give examples and quotes if possible.

Born in 1869 in British India, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, is recognised to be the

biggest reason for Indian independence from the British Empire. He moved to London to
train in law, and was soon found helping farmers and rural residents to fight against
private companies and investors who were performing invasive land-grab techniques. He
then returned to India, where he became the leader of the Indian National Congress, and
soon was performing peaceful protests and hunger strikes in order to achieve some level
of independence from the British Empire. Gandhi was of the Hindu religion, and openly
expressed his religiosity.

Religious participation
How does this person demonstrate their participation in their religion?
How frequently does this person practise elements of a religious way of life? How do they do
this?

Gandhi was, as mentioned before, a Hindu. Although he was not a member of the
ordained sect, he was still an avid believer and teacher of the Hindu beliefs and ways. He
was especially teaching of the non-violent ways of demonstrating, and the search for
peace in one's life.

Religious observance
How does religion affect the person?
How do they live out their faith in their daily lives?

Gandhi was influenced to such a degree by his religious views that he devoted his whole
life to them. As a believer of Hinduism, pacifism and partially Jainism, Gandhi was led to

help those in India and elsewhere who were being oppressed to become free.

Religious identity
How did this person come to identify with this religion?
Is their choice of religion a result of age, family or ethnicity? And if so how?

Gandhi was most likely drawn to Hinduism as he was born in India, where the most
popular religion is Hinduism. He was also inspired by Leo Tolstoy, as they both shared
similar philosophies about the world and society.
