Elias Barreiro, the Artist.

Professor Elas Barreiro was born in Camaguey,


Republic of Cuba in 1930, he began studying guitar as
an autodidact, without even knowing the musical
notation; years later, he studied at the Conservatory of
Music in Havana and completed postgraduate studies
with the great guitarist Andrs Segovia, in Santiago de
Compostela, Spain.
Mr. Barreiro has performed in recitals at the most
demanding audiences internationally and has played
the most important works of the repertoire of his instrument as a soloist with orchestras and
chamber music groups, and he has made adaptations and an arrangement of classical works
included in more than forty books of guitar. He has been Jury member in international guitar
competitions, and in the year 1992 won the Mentor Award from the Guitar Foundation of
America.
Since 1967 Professor Barreiro has been the Head of the Guitar Program at Tulane University in
New Orleans, considerable number of his pupils are concert artists and others occupy faculty
positions at universities and schools across the United States of America.
In 2000, Mr. Barreiro was awarded a prize for career achievement awarded by the New Orleans
International Music Colloquium and the city of New Orleans issued a proclamation for the
creation of "Professor Barreiro Award" for his outstanding contribution to the community and
the music students.

Two selections recording by Elas Barreiro in the CD "Guitar, Music of Cuba", published by
Mel Bay Publications, was used in 2002 as incidental music in the Original Sin a MGM film.
Elias Barreiro has published works in publications Hansen, Willis Music Company, Editions
Orphe, and Mel Bay Publications. Mr. Barreiro possesses an impressive discography.
