INTRODUCTION TO AIR CURTAINS

Air Curtains are used for a wide variety of

applications from thermal barriers at shopping
mall entrances, to fly and insect prevention at
restaurant service doors, to factory freight
doors for wind resistance and temperature
separation. The air curtain enables traffic to
flow unobstructed through openings while
maintaining distinct environments, thus
resulting in energy savings.

The Leading Edge Technical Guide is

designed to assist the air curtain planner in
understanding how this technology works,
where air curtains are typically used, and their
advantages. This document provides a
complete description of Leading Edge Air
Curtains including construction, performance,
accessories and installation. Also included is
an energy savings calculation procedure,
along with a compilation of the most
frequently asked questions.

The most common type of air curtain is the

horizontal, non- recirculating, single jet type. It
will satisfy the majority of needs for
commercial and industrial applications. The
discharge velocity of the air curtain can range

Air curtains consist of a fan and nozzle system

which create a jet of high velocity air directed
across a door opening, providing a protective
air shield. The air shield minimizes the transfer
of heat, moisture, dust, fumes and insects
through the doorway.

Applications are: Thermal

from
unconditioned air; Interior Separation for
particle and dust control; and Fly and Insect
Control for sanitation maintenance. Each
application is discussed in more detail in the
following pages.

Air curtains, as illustrated in Figure 1, pull in air

and accelerate it through the fan and nozzle
system, thus creating a moving wall of air
across the opening or doorway. The air curtain
fan adds kinetic energy to the air, providing the
resistance to the penetration of unwanted air or
particles. This added kinetic energy in the
discharge air also resists the penetration of
outside air due to the wind, as well as the
invasion of insects. The air is provided at a

natural convection flow of air, provide excellent

resistance to the penetration of outside winds,
and prevent the intrusion of flies and insects,
fumes and dust.

Air curtains provide environmental separation

for open doorways. This is achieved without
the drawbacks of visibility-limiting solid
barriers such as strip and impact doors.

Air curtains reduce the risk of accidents by

allowing vehicles and people to move through
without obstructions to visibility or movement.
While allowing this freedom of movement
through doorways, air curtains minimize the

Thermal Barriers (Conditioned Air)

the doorway into the interior of the building.

The warmer, lighter air flows to the outside
through the top half of the open doorway. For
large openings, this results in excessive
energy losses.
The installation of a properly-designed air
curtain at the top of the doorway provides a
shield of high velocity air that deflects the
natural convection air flow. This significantly
reduces the exchange of air and energy
between warm and cold sides, resulting in
monetary savings (see page 28-32 for energy
savings calculations).

When dividing spaces with temperature

differences, the air curtain prevents the
natural flow of air caused by differing
temperatures. The difference between indoor
and outdoor temperature creates an
imbalance in density, and therefore a pressure
variation which causes the infiltration of
outside air.
Figure 2 illustrates the loss of conditioned air
before and after the installation of an air
curtain at the doorway. As an example, during
the winter heating season, the outside colder
denser air flows through the bottom half of

Wind Resistance (Exterior Doors)

In many instances, the infiltration of

unconditioned air is driven by a combination of
the
temperature difference and the added
problem of a prevailing wind at a door opening.

Figure 3 illustrates a prevailing wind at an

open doorway before and after the installation
of an air curtain. Without the air curtain at the
doorway, the prevailing wind will flow into a
tight structure through about one-half of the
area and conditioned air will flow out of the
other half. If there is a loose structure the
prevailing wind could enter through the entire
area of the doorway, resulting in a significant

loss of energy at unprotected doorways.

Air curtains resist this infiltration of outside

unconditioned air (see Figure 3) by blocking
and deflecting the incoming wind. To protect
the opening against incoming wind, the air
curtain must generate a shield of high velocity
air that is strong enough to deflect the force of
the wind.

Wind Resistance is achieved by using a well designed air curtain with an appropriate
velocity and volume of air, directed at the
appropriate angle at the exterior doorway.

Fly and Insect Control (Sanitation Maintenance)

an air stream that is at least 3 inches thick with

a minimum air velocity of 1600 ft/min, across
the entire entryway measured at 3 feet, above
the floor. Proper design, selection and
installation of an air curtain will allow this
standard to be met, maintaining sanitary
conditions.

Sanitation maintenance applications require

that the air curtain prevents the entry of airborne insects. For fly and insect control the air
curtain projects the high velocity jet across the
opening, thus deflecting and prohibiting the
entrance of unsanitary insects. National
Sanitation Foundation (NSF) Standard 37
requires that service entry units shall develop

Interior Separation (Separating Environments)

In many facilities there often exist
manufacturing or production areas adjacent to
either offices or other clean environments,

such as shown in Figure 5. The production

side may generate fumes, dust and heat which
are undesirable in the adjacent areas.

Air curtains are ideally suited for these

applications,
repelling the undesirables
without restricting traffic. The air curtain is
mounted on the clean side so as not to

circulate the contaminants through the unit, as

well as to prevent blowing the contaminants
into the clean side.

Selection Guidelines

discomfort to patrons. In this scenario a

heated air curtain may be used during the
heating season (see pages 22-25).

There are several factors to consider before

selecting an air curtain. The following text will
help you to better understand the conditions
that affect this selection process.

A factor often confused as a wind condition is

negative pressure. Negative pressure is
created when more air is exhausted from a
building than is replaced. Any application
involving negative pressure should be
discussed with the factory.

The primary function of an air curtain is to seal

an opening with a stream of air. The discharge
velocity must be strong enough that the jet
flow completely spans the doorway from top to
bottom and across the entire width of the
opening.
For applications such as fly and insect control
which require maximum protection, it is
common and accepted to use a more powerful
air curtain in order to achieve the necessary
level of protection.
In some applications, such as customer
entrances, this would prove to be
uncomfortable to patrons walking under the air
curtain. For this reason the air curtain is
designed to provide less velocity to avoid

Leading Edge has created individual selection

guides, as well as a master compilation of
these guides (see page 12). These
recommendations should be used as a basis
for air curtain selection. Since it is impossible
to generalize all conditions which may
influence a particular application, we welcome
all questions regarding air curtain selections.
For this we have provided a form (see pages
33-34) which may be faxed or mailed to us for
additional technical evaluation by our
Application Engineering Department.

DESIGN FEATURES

ADVANTAGE LEADING EDGE

Leading Edge is the originator of unitized

construction and has subsequently received US
Patents for all of its designs. Aside from the
obvious advantages of shipping, handling and
installation, we consider performance the primary
design criteria. All Leading Edge Air Curtains are
manufactured as optimized single units
engineered to a given motor HP, speed (RPM),
and blower wheel size to achieve the desired
maximum performance.

Our performance testing proves that when

comparing our patented unitized cabinet designs
to our competitors standard cabinet designs, we
achieve maximum performance ratings. Testing
proves that the maximum effective width of a
single motor blower assembly is 48 inches, and
this construction parameter is used on all of our
models. Other manufacturers using similar motor
blower designs use a guideline of up to 60 inches
effective width.

This patented method of construction allows us to

engineer the prescribed intake and discharge area
for the required back pressure. This allows us to
achieve maximum outlet velocity uniformity.

An example of our construction (see diagram

below) would be our 120 - inch air curtain model
which consists of three motor blower assemblies
required to achieve maximum performance. A
competitor offers its 120 - inch model with only two
motor blowers assemblies. Testing proves that our
design provides superior outlet velocity uniformity.

SMART-TRAC Adjustable Mounting System

(Pat. Pend.)

AN EXCLUSIVE OPTIONAL FEATURE OF THE HIGH VOLOCITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SERIES...THE ONLY EFFICIENT METHOD OF LIFTING AND
POSITIONING ANY INDUSTRIAL AIR CURTAIN DURING INSTALLATION.

INSTALLATION ADVANTAGES:
When suspension mounting an air curtain, a common problem is the existence of
overhead pipes, conduits, beams, etc. which impede the alignment and mounting of
an air curtain.
The exclusive Leading Edge Smart-Trac Mounting System allows for six-way
adjustment at the cabinet to compensate for possible overhead obstacles. This
mounting method also allows for efficient elevation and positioning of the air
curtain during installation.
Competitors models, with pre-drilled mounting holes, lack the flexibility of
Smart-Trac. Their mounting method for installation does not compensate for
overhead obstacles and alignment. The installer must make such adjustments at the
beam rather than at the cabinet. This operation is both cumbersome and timeconsuming and often left to the discretion of the installer. Smart-Trac saves both
time and installation costs.

Special Features:

Allows for 6-way adjustment:

making installing, positioning,
and adjustment easier.
Prevents swaying, adds stability.
12-gauge cadmium plated steel,
continuous channel.
Adjustment holes in continuous
channel: 2-inches on center for
cross adjusting.
Rigid cross bars allow for lateral
adjustment.
Designed for use with 1/2
threaded rods.*
Ships complete in one package,
ready to assemble.

6-WAY
ADJUSTMENT

Unique End Plate Mounting:

Mounting end plate constructed of 12-gauge steel.

Designed and engineered to fit in
conjunction with continuous channels.

Actual Dimensions: 12 5/8W x 15 1/4H

*Rods are to be supplied by installer.

Smart-Trac also required for wall bracket mounting. Refer to pages 26-27 of this brochure.

ENVIRONMENTAL ELECTRICALLY HEATED SERIES

SINGLE PHASE

For use in customer entrances to treat

incoming cold air where a gentle flow of
air is desired for customer comfort.

APPLICATION
GUIDELINES:

SPECIAL
FEATURES:

For use in vestibules, lobbies, staging areas, reception areas,

waiting rooms and other customer greeting areas.
Heated air curtains are not designed to hold 100% of incoming
cold air, as the required air velocity generated would be
uncomfortable to patrons. The incoming cold air is entrained in
the warm curtain of air, thus maintaining comfort levels.
Heated units also reduce the wind chill effect of personnel
walking through or standing near an opening.

Heated units supplied with pre-wired heater control box for

efficient installation.
Wall-mounted 24-volt thermostat for temperature control.
Multiple coil capacities for proper application requirements.
Heater control panel mounts in front of nozzle, below grill.
Available as a factory-installed option for new air curtains or
as a retro-fit kit for existing air curtains.

Note: Heated models designed primarily for front door entrances to supplement existing heat and to prevent infiltration of colder outside air. Heated
units not recommended for areas subject to high winds or for door heights over 10-feet from nozzle to floor. Automatic door switch is not recommended for heated units.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The following information has been grouped by category to quickly and easily direct you to the appropriate answer to
your question. Below are seven categories which comprise the most common or frequently asked questions to Leading
Edge. If you have any additional questions, please call for assistance.

LEADING EDGE

effectiveness. These applications should be

discussed with our Application Engineering
Department.

Q. Who is Leading Edge Ventilation

Products?
A. Leading Edge Ventilation Products is a
successful 22-year-old firm that manufactures
and distributes a premium quality line of
specialized ventilation products consisting of
commercial and industrial air curtains, ceiling
fans and air circulators.

CONSTRUCTION

Q. Do you offer plastic air curtain cabinets?

A. No, all Leading Edge cabinets are galvanized
steel with an exclusive powder primer and
electrostatically-applied enamel finish. Plastic
cabinets, although less expensive, absorb dirt
and are virtually impossible to clean. Plastic
cabinets also lack the rigidity of longer-length
models and are less durable than steel.

Q. Are Leading Edge products available

nationally and worldwide?
A. Yes, Leading Edge manufactures its products
in all-world voltages and is distributed
nationwide and in over 30 countries.

Q. What is the maximum effective width

allowed per single motor-blower
assembly?
A. We limit our effective width to 48 inches per
motor blower assembly in order to achieve
maximum performance and outlet uniformity.
Our competitors identical blowers use a
guideline of up to 60-inch effective width,
which we find unacceptable (See Page 10).

APPLICATIONS

Q. Why does Leading Edge offer so many

models?
A. We design and build models with the specific
air performance rating best suited to meet the
requirements of most applications. Models
range from a compact 24-inch wide drive thru
unit to a 144-inch wide freight door unit.
This wide range of models is required to
adequately serve the many application areas
explained in this guide.

Q. Does Leading Edge offer variable speed

models that use solid state controls?
A. No, all electric motors have a bothersome
60 Hz humming noise when speed is varied
using solid state controls. We use 2-speed
motors to eliminate this noise problem.

Q. Do Leading Edge Air Curtains meet

NSF requirements?
A. Yes, select Food Service models are UL
Sanitation-listed to meet NSF Standard 37
(See Page 15).

Q. What is the difference between an

interior and exterior door?
A. An interior door separates two interior
environments, while an exterior door is one
that separates the interior environment from
the exterior environment. Exterior doorway
does not mean the air curtain is mounted
outside.

Q. Does negative pressure or positive

pressure affect air curtain performance?
A. Yes, a pressure difference between two
environments creates a natural tendency for
air flow from the area of higher pressure to the
area of lower pressure. This natural
phenomenon can overtake the air stream of
the air curtain and drastically reduce its

37

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ACCESSORIES

A. Yes, all Leading Edge Air Curtains are

designed for easy installation. The LowProfile, Environmental and High Velocity
Series are provided with a keyhole mounting
template. The High Volume Series features
Smart-Trac as standard equipment. All model
series come with a comprehensive eight-page
operating, installation and parts manual.

Q. What is the function of an automatic

door switch?
A. This switch mounts at the doorway to
activate the motor upon door opening (See
Page 21). It is wired directly to a single-phase
line for 120/220 volt air curtains. For 3-phase
units motor control panels are required
(See Page 21).

Q. Can an air curtain be mounted above a

drop ceiling?
A. Yes, the air curtain can be recess-mounted
above a drop ceiling. However, provisions
must be made for make-up air.

Q. What is the difference between a

control panel and a motor starter?
A. A control panel reduces the line voltage to
accommodate the 120-volt instant on/off
automatic door switch. A motor starter is a
relatively inexpensive manual on/off switch for
3-phase units, which is available locally.

Q. Can an air curtain be mounted over a roll

up door?
A. Yes, Leading Edge offers a variety of
mounting systems to facilitate various
installations- (See page 26-27).

Q. Which applications require the use of an

intake air filter?
A. A filter should be used if the Air Curtain is
either near a food preparation area or an
extremely dust- and dirt-ridden environment
(See Page 20).

Q. Should an air curtain be mounted inside a

cooler/freezer?
A. No, the air curtain should not be mounted
inside a cooler/freezer. If mounted inside the
unit it will pump cold air out of the cooler/
freezer. The movement of the cold air at high
velocities creates discomfort for personnel
near the door, and stirring up the cold air may
lead to fog.

HEATED AIR CURTAINS

Q. Will an electrically-heated air curtain

keep cold air from entering my restaurant?
A. Heated air curtains are not designed to hold
100% of incoming cold air, as the required air
velocity generated of the unit would be
uncomfortable to patrons. The incoming cold
air is entrained in the warm curtain of air, thus
maintaining comfort levels.

Q. Are Leading Edge Air Curtains easy to

field wire?
A. Yes, all Leading Edge Air Curtains are
internally-wired to convenient junction boxes
located on the side or top of the unit. All
electrical installations should be done by a
qualified electrician to local code.

Q. Can I use an instant on/off switch on a

heated air curtain?
A. No, use of an instant on/off automatic switch
on a heated air curtain would render the heat
ineffective. When the door opened, the heated
air curtain would be energized. The door
would have been closed before the element/
coil could reach operating temperature. Thus,
minimal heat would be provided.

MAINTENANCE AND APPEARANCE

Q. Are Leading Edge Air Curtains easy to

clean?
A. All Leading Edge Air Curtains are constructed
of galvanized corrosion-resistant steel, coated
with a chip-resistant beige epoxy enamel,
which is easily wiped clean with a rag using
any brand of commercial cleaner.

Q. Which type of heat should be used:

electric, steam or hot water?
A. Electric heat is used primarily for commercial
applications to treat incoming cold air. Steam
or hot water may be used for industrial
applications, depending on the heat source
available.

INSTALLATION

Q. Are Leading Edge Air Curtains easy to

install?

38

Q. Are Leading Edge Food Service and

Sanitation Air Curtains easy to maintain
and clean?
A. Yes, inspection and removal of the motorblower assembly requires no tools. All parts
are easily accessible. All bearings are
permanently-lubricated, rubber-sealed and
require no maintenance.
