ABSTRACT
From a conventional orientation the rational for the establishment of truck stops has
been circumscribed to providing diesel fuel not commonly available at filling stations
mainly along busy road transport network. However transport modalities on the ground
reflect that the SADC region in general is beset with a myriad of challenges which have
an impact on the sustainability, productivity, efficiency, quality, and cost of transport
services as well as the cost of products traded in the region.
This paper looks at the how truck stops can be employed as important freight data
collection points along the Maputo corridor. The intelligence gathering would then be
used to improve the efficiency of the corridor and ultimately contribute towards lowering
the cost of doing business.
The paper is based on research conducted by the C-BRTA and completed in 2013. In
delivering the study, qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. The
research concluded that the intervention will address one of the main impediments

experienced in the region namely the lack of credible and up to date traffic/freight data
required for informed decision-making. The paper recommended that truck stops can
configure an ICT system which can be managed centrally, on a live system which can
be accessed by all corridor and border management agencies to enhance decision
making.
