Students will be able to paraphrase a text read aloud in different formats (visually
and orally).
Students will be able to tell a story using descriptive details to support main ideas
or themes.
Describe how this lesson is developmentally appropriate:
Students will need basic knowledge of the objective.
Students will need to know how to read/write.
Teachers will use an independent study instructional strategy in order for
students to write their paragraph of their fictional character.
Students in 4th grade are going through Eriksons industry vs. inferiority stage. In
this lesson, the teacher will work with this by making are students are seeing
success and having them know that they can make something well and get
commended by it. They will read their stories out loud to a group of students and
will want to do well so other students will think highly of their work.
Pre-Assessment
The teacher will review with the students what a setting and main character are.
Then the teacher will put pictures of different places (such as a beach, school,
etc.) on the Smart Board and have the students discuss what they thought the
setting would be.
Assessment
Students will write a personal descriptive story.
Students will paraphrase others stories visually.
Post-Assessment

Lesson Opening:
The teacher will activate student interest by:
Letting them answer on the Smart Board the various settings shown in the
Pre-assessment.
Ask students what their favorite board game is and let them discuss and
share answers in small groups.
Ask some students to share their favorites.
Instructional Input
How will you model/explain/demonstrate all knowledge and skills required of
the objective?
The teacher will start to read Jumanji by Chris Van Allsburg.
The teacher will ask the students to recognize descriptive words, and

Students will be engaged by sharing their pictures (or explaining what it
looks like if uncomfortable sharing drawing) with the projector, and recite
some of the descriptive words they used to draw their picture.
