Surface Area

& Volume

Definition:
The sum of the areas of all of the faces of a threedimensional figure.
Ex. How much construction paper will I need to
fit on the outside of the shape?

Definition:
The measure in cubic units of the interior of a
solid figure; or the space enclosed by a solid
figure.
Ex. How much sand will it hold?

Ex:
How much construction paper would I need to fit
on the outside of a particular rectangular prism?

Formula:
S.A. = 2LW + 2Lh + 2Wh

Ex:
How much sand would I need to fill the inside of a
particular rectangular prism?

Formula:
V = L*W*h

Cylinders
Cylinder: A right prism with circular bases.
The base area is the area of the circle:
The lateral area is the area of the rectangle:
2rh
2r

2r
h

L.S.A =

2rh

T.S.A. =
2r( r + h )
V = Cross sectional area * height
=

r h

r
r
the area of the curved part of the cone. (Excluding the circular base)
L.S.A = 1/2 * perimeter of the base * slant height
= * 2r * l
= r l
total surface area of a right cone is T. S. A. = rl + r2.

Volume of
a Cone

h Here the vertical height

and radius of cylinder &
cone are same.

3( volume of cone) = volume of cylinder

3( V )
= r2h
V = 1/3 r2h

Surface Area of a Sphere

The surface area of a sphere is four times the

product of pi and the square of the radius of

the sphere.

S . A. 4 r

Volume of a Sphere
The volume of a sphere is four thirds the product of

pi and the cube of the radius of the sphere.
