Assignment 1

Submission date: 2 October 2015 (Friday), 5.00 pm.

This assignment is a group work with 2 students in each group.

1. Identify the components indicated on the machine shown in Fig. 1 (a) and (b).

2. A 80 kg lamp is supported by two rods AB and BC as shown in Fig. 2. If AB has a diameter
of 10 mm and BC has a diameter of 8 mm, determine the average normal stress in each
rod.

3. The two members are pinned together at B as shown in Fig.3. Top views of the pin
connections at A and B are also given in the figure. If the pins have an allowable shear
strass of allow = 90MPa and the allowable tensile stress of rod CB is allow = 90MPa
determine the smallest diameter of pins A and B, and the diameter of rod BC necessary to
support the load.

4. The steel bar as shown in Fig. 4 is made from 2 segments, AB and BD, having cross
sectional areas of AAB= 600 mm2 and ABD=1200 mm2. Determine the vertical displacement
of end A.

5. An aluminium rod of 0.6 inch in diameter and 50 in long and a steel rod of 0.3 inch in
diameter and 20 inch long are spaced 80 inch apart and fastened to a horizontal beam that
varies a 2000 lb load as shown in Fig. 5. Evaluate whether the beam remain horizontal if
x=45 in. Justify your answer.

6. The steel rod shown in Fig. 6 has a diameter of 5 mm. It is attached to a fixed wall at A,
and before it is loaded, there is a gap between the wall at B and the rod of 1 mm.
Determine the reactions at A and B if the rod is subjected to an axial force force of P= 20
kN as shown. Neglect the collar size at C. Take the Young Modulus of steel, E=100 GPa
