A non-sway column in a building frame with flexible joints is 3m high and is subjected
to the following load and moment:
Factored axial load = 250kN
Factored moment Mz at top of column = 12kNm
Factored moment Mz at bottom of column = 20kNm
Design a suitable beam-column assuming fy = 250MPa. Take the effective length of the
column as 0.75L along both the axes.

A beam-column of length 3.5m is subjected to a compression of 400kN and a major

axis moment of 4kNm. The weaker plane of the column is strengthened by bracing. If
the effective length factor is 0.8, design the beam-column, assuming Fe410 grade steel.

Design the non-sway intermediate column in a building frame with flexible joints of
3.5m height for the following data:

Factored axial load = 300kN

Take fy = 250MPa. Take effective length factor, k = 0.75 along both the axes.

Design a beam-column of length of 3.0m if it carries a compressive load of 250kN, a

major axis moment of 6kNm and a minor axis moment of 3kNm. Assume that the
effective length factor is 0.9 and the column is free to buckle in any plane. Take fy =
250MPa.
