Dynamic Pile Driving Formulas Guide

This document provides information on dynamic pile driving formulas, including the Gates formula modified by FHWA for calculating pile capacity based on blow count. It notes the formula should use a factor of safety of at least 2.5 for piles in ground conditions that are not well understood. The document also briefly describes proper and quicker methods for measuring pile set during driving and recommends using pile driving formulas on site to quickly confirm pile installation is proceeding as expected, while acknowledging CAPWAP testing provides more accurate capacity values.

RN = 1.75[(E)^0.5][log10(N)] - 100

RN in kips
E in ft-lbs
N is number of blows for 1 inch drive
For allowable, suggested to use at least FS=2.5
and 3 in ground not well known.
Suggest that you follow the English units, then convert to

Pile driving formulas are looked on by
purists as the N value is. Most do not
suggest its use believing that CAPWAP
is better and it appears to be so, but . . .
When driving piles, it is sure a good way to
confirm, quickly, that things are as they
should be.
