What are the responsibilities of companies in this or similar situations?


They should get involved more deeply in this or similar situations by sending
donations, mobile ambulatories, or at least helping to the humanitarian organizations
which are supporting the damaged families.
Further instruct own employees about the internal standards and instructions related
to WHO Infant food code.
Carry on sponsoring international medical events related to the nutrition issues.
They should respond faster to the arisen problems, otherwise, they create an image of
careless enterprise.

What could Nestl have done to have avoided the accusations of killing Third World babies
and still market its product?
Support breastfeeding by organizing educational conferences and providing
pamphlets about breastfeeding and infant food supplements.
Analyze the countries culture
After Nestls experience, how do you suggest it, or any other company, can protect itself in
the future?
First of all, before entering any of new markets, the Nestle or any other enterprise,
has to get informed about the economics conditions, traditions and culture in that state. In
general, any enterprise should not only care about their profits, they have to think about
consumers as well. At this point, the CSR comes to the scene.

The ethically and socially responsible decisions can be managed between 5 broad categories:
Employment practices
Consumer Protection
Environmental Protection
Involvement in the Political life of the state
Human Rights
Some of the decisions were not ethically and socially responsible; for example they were
provided to the people who do not have enough experience/how-to-do for giving it the baby.
Then ambiguous ads were in the place as well.

What advice would you give to Nestl now in light of the new problem of HIV infection being
spread via mothers milk?
Provide the local population with the booklets stating about dangers and risks of
breast-feeding during HIV, and benefits of baby food nutrition at the same time.
Moreover, they need to educate infected people.
Carry research on diminishing the risk of transmission of the HIV from mother to
child.
