Ihavemixedfeelingsaboutthisessay.Ittriestocomparecitiesandtheirarchitecture
withfilmsandthususesthesamelanguageusedforexplainingthesetupofafilmto
ascribeanarrativetoacity.IcanrelatetothatideaifwethinkofcitieslikeParisandits
EiffelTower,whichstandsforloveandromance,orNewYorkwithitsbusystreetsand
highrisingSkyscrapers,whichstandformodernity,capitalism,thefutureetc..
Buteventhentheyaretoocomplexandbuiltupofsomanydifferentobjectsandpeople
dependentonanincomprehensibleamountofvariables,thatIdonotthinkitispossible
tofigureoutonecoherentcomprehensiblenarrativeforanyonecity.
WhatIhavetoagreewithisthefactthatarchitectureisbestportrayedinfilmandnotin
photosbeingabletowatchacontinuousfilmofabuildingfrommultipleperspectives
givesthebestimpressionofsize,surroundingsandactualgeometryofthebuilding.
ActuallynowthatIthinkofit,itcanalsohavethequiteoppositeeffect,ifonlyapartofa
buildingisshownandmaybeevenfromaweirdperspective,likethephotoofthe
liverpoolcitycentre,itisveryhardtogetanideaofhowthebuildingactuallylooksand
howitfitsintothecity.
