The differences between

the drive train systems

By: Cody Winsor and Jonathon English

Direct drive
Direct drives have one motor for each motive device on the robot.
There is no energy transfer system, the motor is directly
connected.
Direct drives are different from the other drives because there is
no energy transfer system.

Belt drive
Belt drives use wheels with a groove on the edge. Belts fit into the
groove and turns the belt when the pulley is rotated. Typically,
two wheels are connected by a belt in this fashion. One wheel is
attached to the drive motor and the second wheel is attached to
the axle.
Belt drives are different from the other drives because they use
wheels with a groove on the edge, it also uses a belt instead of
chains or gears. It also uses a pulley.

Chain drives
Chain drives are similar to belt drives. The difference lies in the
use of toothed wheels instead of the grooved wheels and the use
of a chain instead of a belt. The mechanical advantage results
from the ratio of the different diameters or the ratio of the
different numbers of teeth on the sprockets.
Chain drives are different from other drives because they use
toothed wheels and a chain in the place of a belt or gears.

Geared drives
Geared drives are similar to the chain and belt drives, using
teethed wheels, but with a direct connection between the wheels.
The mechanical advantage is calculated from the ratio of the
different numbers of teeth on the gears.
The geared drives are different from the other drives because it
uses toothed wheels with a direct connection between the wheels.
It also uses gears.
