Examples of Formative Assessments

My Ideal Solution
Objectives:
-Given the RAFT prompt from this lesson, TSWBAT brainstorm ideal world
designs that are original and well thought out.
-Using their completed acrylic paintings, TSWBAT reflect upon and discuss
the use of space and value in their own artwork.
Imagine what your finished painting of a new habitable world will
look like. Then write out a list of at least eight criteria that you
think would be part of creating a successful version of this painting.
-Criteria might include craftsmanship, appropriate subject
matter, emphasized elements and principles, composition, and
other related explorations.
Next, rank all of your criteria based on their importance to the
success of your final product.
Save this list. When you have completed your final painting, come
back to it. Write about which criteria ended up being important to
judging the success of your painting and which criteria were not as
important as you expected.
Lastly, rate yourself in each category on a scale of 1-5, with 5 being
the most successful.

Observation Game
Objectives:
-Using preliminary sketches, TSWBAT create an acrylic painting with a
foreground, middle ground, and background light and shadow, and using
primary colors to create their own colors in an effective composition.
-Given acrylic paint, TSWBAT create the illusion of 3-dimensionality by using
light and shadow from a specific, identifiable light source in their acrylic
landscape.
You will have 2 minutes to observe the following painting. Try to
remember as much about it as possible. Pay special attention to
how/where the artist uses light direction to show threedimensionality, and how/where the artist uses foreground, middle
ground and background to create the illusion of depth.

(At the end of the 2 minutes, after taking away the picture of the
painting): Write and draw as much as you can remember about that
painting. Be sure to label where and how you remember the artist
using light direction, foreground, middle ground, and background.
