LARA WHITEHEAYZ Group Project for Math 1050-006 and Math 1050-010 Fall Semester 2015 Students will work in groups of 2 to 3 students. One person is not a group and any project submitted by one individual will not be graded. ‘The group will submit ONE completed assignment, Be sure that every group member's full name is on this, paper. Each group member will need an electronic copy of the project for their e-Portfolio, but for grading purposes the project must be submitted on paper. DUE DATE: 24 September 2015 How to successfully work in a group: ‘© Be sure that every group member has the names and contact information of other group members. © Respect your group by staying in contact and by actively contributing to the project. © Each person needs to do the project alone first. ‘© After each person has completed the project alone, the group should compare answers and work together to correct any errors. ‘© Before turning in the assignment, every group member should carefully review the entire assignment to be sure it is neat, legible, complete, and correct. © Make absolutely certain that your paper is turned in by the due date. Reflection Paper and e-Portfolio ‘As you work through the project, keep in mind that each individual student will need to complete the reflection assignment and post it, along with a copy of the group project, in their e-Portfolio. While the project is to be done in groups, your reflective writing will be your own thoughts and words. The reflection assignment and e- Portfolio instructions are posted in MyMathLab. Transportation Costs (or Trucker’s Dilemma) College Algebra Project A truck driving 320 miles over a flat interstate at a constant rate of 50 miles per hour gets 7 miles to the gallon. Fuel costs $3.25 per gallon. For each mile per hour increase in speed, the truck loses a tenth of a mile per gallon in its mileage. Drivers get $28 per hour in wages and fixed costs for running the truck amount to $12.80 per hour. What constant speed (between 50 mph and the speed limit of 70 mph) should the truck drive to minimize the total cost of the trip? Part I: To solve a problem like this, it is a good idea to start with calculating an actual example. We will begin by finding the total cost if the truck is driven at 50 miles per hour. ‘The cost is made up of two components: the fuel cost and the time cost. Be sure to include the correct units with each value below. Show your work. A. Let's start out by finding how long the trip will take. 320 mes Lee 320me cue 7 * Somme SO The length of time required for the trip is_©-" (Do not round.) B. Part IIL, We should now have a good process for determining the total cost of a trip for any rate of speed greater than or equal to 50 miles per hour. Next is to create a Total Cost function using X as the unknown rate in miles per hour. Your answers below should contain only one variable, X. Show your work. Then simplify your answers and remember 10 include units. As you work through each step, test your answers by plugging in 50 mph and then 70 mph and comparing with results from parts land Il A. Assuming the function is modeling correctly, you need to calculate the minimum cost. Use graphing software to ‘graph the Cost Function and find its minimum point on the given domain.
