Re: Declining the Nomination and Vote as County Commissioner of the Year
Dear Bret and Kerry,
As you know, at a September 24, 2015 USACCC meeting in Midway, Utah I was nominated and voted by my fellow Commissioners as County Commissioner of the Year, with a view to my being formally presented with this award and recognition at the UAC Annual Convention this November in St. George. I respectfully decline the nomination and award. As Commissioners and Councilmembers from our various Counties, we each face our own challenges and deal with our own unique issues. While we may differ in our opinions, sometimes widely, I consider my fellow Commissioners as friends, and I recognize the sacrifices and pressures they face as public servants. This nomination by my esteemed peers is meaningful to me and will always remain so. I truly understand the dilemma that this nomination and vote has created for some of them and for certain other members of UAC. While I was not present when the nominations were made nor when the vote was taken, I do know that there were other Commissioners nominated, each of whom are very deserving of this recognition. I hope that their nominations will stand. UAC exists to strengthen Counties, and the Counties exist to serve the Citizens. I hope that my declination will remove an unnecessary diversion from focusing on the duties and functions that are most important to UAC as an organization, to the Commissioners and Councilmembers who faithfully serve their Counties, and to the Citizens who rely on us. Therefore, this is to formally notify you that I, of my own volition, officially decline the nomination and vote as County Commissioner of the Year. I give up all claims to that honor and award. I put this matter back in your hands to allow the organization to select another individual as County Commissioner or Councilmember of the Year.
