‘tom Discussion 5: Formulate geographic research questions and hypothesis. ‘Sep29, 2019 8309 Yb, lve always wondered how sand is formed because cand is found on deserts, as ‘oceans, and on beaches, butwhy are they commonly found there instead of other places? | find this quite weird because aren't soil and sand consists of somewhat ‘similar components? From my knowledge, soil and sand are both minorals from earth that has simiar origins, but what made them cifferent through the passage of tme? Also, how does scientists even figure out the age of these sands? What clues dees sand give scientists about their age? ‘tom Discussion 5: Formulate geographic research questions and hypothesis, on2, 2010 12979m =p. I would liko to addross the research question of how mountains are created SISELE There are three ways mountains can form. One way is by having two tectonic {G2 plates crashing into one encther, the erash would result in the plates to crumple and form 2 mountain on earth's surface. The other way mountains form is by having two plates code and one plate would end up being on top of another. The last way that mountains form is when magma gets trap inside a volcano and builds up when magna, ‘cools. The shape and size of the mountains are determined by how old they are and how they were formed. Scientists estimate the age of mountains in the old days by looking at the peak of the mountains. A mountain would be considored young if it has sharp tip, ‘scientists know this because a sharp tip means thatthe mountain hasn't been there fora long time for itto be eroded into a dull shape. They also consider what type of mineral the mountains are made of because different minerals erode faster | used background information from the following sites to understand more about mountains. Scientists has a method using mathematics to estimate the age “Sofa tree called the tree aging formula. They frst measure the diameter of the tree at 54 inches ebove ground. They then mutiply the tros's diameter with the growth factor ofthe tree and you will get an estimated age of the tree. The growth factors isthe growth rate of the tree, which varies depending on the location of the tree. For example, some trees will grow faster due to plentiful supplies of water and rich soil. Different species of trees has, difierent growth factor as well. As for the question of how scientists estimate the time a tree had boon planted on the soil, scientists simply just find the difference between the current year and the estimated age ofthe tree. You will hen obtain the estimated year of when the tree was planted on the soil. | used the following sources to support my response about the age of trees. “How Old Is That Tree?” Missouri Department of Conservation. Conservation Commission of Missouri, n.d. Web. 03 Oct. 2015. Nix, Steve. “Estimating a Tree's Age Without Cutting.” About. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Oct. 2015.
