B. Types of Anaesthetic
Pre-medication
Pre-medication is a drug that may be given to you
before an anaesthetic to help reduce or relieve
anxiety. They are not given very often.
You will be having a General anaesthetic, a
Local anaesthetic, a Regional anaesthetic or a
combination of these.
General anaesthesia
A general anaesthetic is a mixture of drugs to
keep you unconscious and pain free during an
operation.
Nausea or vomiting
Headache

Epileptic seizure

Brain damage.
Increased risks
Risks are increased if;
Diabetes
Heart disease
Kidney disease
High blood pressure
Serious illnesses
False teeth, caps, loose teeth or other
dental problems

Do NOT drink alcohol, take other mindaltering substances, or smoke. They may
react with the anaesthetic drugs.
