Volunteerism
Volunteerism is the donation of time, money, or any kind of work. The principal purpose
of this activity is the welfare of the community. Many people around the world, animals and even
the environment benefit with volunteerism; and one of the groups of persons who benefit a lot
are the same volunteers.
First of all, volunteerism helps you to improve and use your skills to help others. For
example at the AHRC you can help people with intellectual and developmental disabilities using
your skills. Volunteerism with the Service-Learner also provides the opportunity to teachers to
use their skills to teach the students in different learning areas. According with the web page
www.nycservice.org Volunteers can use your time, passion, skills to serve NYC. This is a great
advantage because volunteers can find activities relate with things that they know and feel
comfortable.
Another advantage of volunteerism is that it brings you closer to your community. For
instance, at Holocaust Resource Center, they are looking for students interested in fighting
intolerance and discrimination through education and research, offering a unique learning
opportunity. If a student joins a group like that, they can use that learning experience to be closer
to the academic community. Partnerships for Parks are also a good example because this
program allows you to work with people of your community to preserve parks in benefit of the
