EXTRACTION AND PULVERIZATION OF DRIED SAMPAGUITA FOR THE
PRODUCTION OF TITRATION pH INDICATOR
CONCERNS ON USE OF SYNTHETIC INDICATORS
Today synthetic indicators are the choice of acid-base titrations. Commercial indicators are expensive and some of them have toxic effects on users and can also cause environmental pollution. For these reasons there has been an increasing interest in searching for alternative sources of indicators from natural origins. These alternatives would be cheaper, more available, simple to extract, less toxic to users and environmentally friendly. Many substances around us that can be used as an indicator of acid and alkali. For example, leaf, flower, turmeric, mangosteen skin, and purple cabbage. This is because the solution of these materials give a different color on acid, alkali and neutral solutions.
SAMPAGUITA AS FLAVONOID AND TANNIN SOURCE
According to Abugri et. al. (2012), total flavonoids (TF) and condensed tannin (CT) from the crude leaves might be the major reasons for the activity of extracts as an indicator for simple acid-base titration. Kunhachan et al. (2012) made a chromatographic analysis on the components of sampaguita.

GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR THE SOLVENT EXTRACTION OF NATURAL
INDICATORS Flowers were cleaned by distilled water and petals of these flowers were kept in strong sunlight until they get completely withered. The dried petals were grinded into fine powder with a mechanical blender and then triturated in mortal and pestle and the resulting solution was filtered through muslin cloth. The resulted aqueous extract was used as natural indicator for acidimetric and alkalimetery. The extract was preserved in light closed container and stored away from direct sunlight. Following the similar process methanolic extract of dried pulverized petals was prepared, filtered and used as natural methanolic indicator. Reagents and volumetric solutions were prepared as per standard.
