History of Chinatown
-After the transcontinental railroad was built, the Chinese
began to disperse from the pacific coast to the midwest and
east coast.
-The first Chinese immigrants in Chicago were recorded in
the 1870 census.
-T.C. Moy arrived in 1878, he was considered the first
Chinese pioneer of the city.
History of Chinatown
-The largest influx of Chinese immigrants came in the 1950s
and 1960s
-During these two decades the population doubled itself from
about 7,000 to 14,000
-The first Chinese community was built around Van Buren and
Clark street but because of high rent prices the community
moved
Present Chinatown
-The present chinatown consists of 8 blocks, bounded by the
Cermak road and the railway embankment.
-Chinatown in considered a place for newly arrived
immigrants to adjust to American customs before moving to
the suburbs.
-Newly arrived immigrants are helped, by the community, to
find jobs and a place to live.
-As the Chinese leave Chinatown for a better life elsewhere
they are constantly being replaced by new immigrants.
