Hierarchy of Politics
The nation has its origins dating back to
1901 when colonies that were self governed by
different British colonies came together to form
one union. The land of Australia has a Prime
Minister who is the elected official; the current
prime minister is Malcom Turnbull (pictured left).
Under the prime minister there is the following
system. Australia follows a federal government
system, so there branches of government include
the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary. Australia has a constitution as well, and
each of these branches meet a specific need of the government, for example the
legislature or parliament is the branch that votes on new laws, while the Judiciary
is the branch that enforces laws and upholds the checks and balances of powers
between the other two branches. Executive branch is the one responsible for
carrying out the laws or upholding them.

The Prime Minister

The Prime Minister is chosen by a vote by the members of the government. Once he or she is elected by this
select group of people they can retain the position as long as they meet a few requirements. One requirement is
that the elected person has to be a part of member of the parliament which is the legislature branch of the
government. This person also has to retain the support of the existing government. The prime minister is the
most powerful person in nation and this person has many roles they have to live up to once elected. They
oversee meetings in which new laws are being discussed; also the prime minister has the power to select
members to be ministers in the government. The prime minister is the spokesperson of the nation, and

represents the Australian government in any meeting outside of Australia. The Prime Minister has two places of
residents; The Lodge in Canberra, and Kirribilli House in Sydney.
