NSW Shooters and Fishers Party MLC Robert Borsak received a leak from Cabinet about Federal changes to lever-action firearm laws.
“We just had a leak from Federal Cabinet,” Mr Borsak said.
“Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan today took his proposal to restrict lever action firearms to Cabinet. His plan is to make five-shot lever action firearms Category B, and seven-shot variants Category D.
“This will mean that people who own these already legal firearms under different licence categories will have to surrender them without compensation. Category D also makes acquiring them near impossible because it requires a seldom-issued Commissioner’s permit.
“Minister Keenan has also lied to Cabinet. On the one hand he’s saying that the State Governments are pushing him to make the change, when really he’s still ringing around trying to get them all to agree.
“What this says to us is that Malcolm Turnbull wants this rushed through so that he can get it off the agenda before an early election and blame the State Governments for the change. The million licensed shooters of Australia are somehow meant to believe the National Firearms Review is an open process, but it is far from it.
“So far, the Federal Attorney-General’s Department’s Firearms and Weapons Policy Working Group (FWPWG) has only offered 30 groups a chance to respond to the NFA’s changes – 20 of whom actually replied. The Shooters and Fishers Party certainly were not among them,” he said.
Mr Borsak urged law-abiding firearms owners to lobby their State and Federal representatives so that this change doesn’t happen quietly.
“We won't let this happen without a fight,” Mr Borsak said.
