HewasanExplosiveOrdnanceDisposalOfficer,alsoknownasanE.O.D.officer,which
involvedmanyskillssuchasunderwaterswimming,divingwithexplosives,demolition
underwateranddisarmingbombs,minesandmissiles.HejoinedtheNavyin1961.Forcedto
jointhemilitarybecauseofthedraft,JimdecidedtojointheNavylikehisfather.
Jimwouldhavejoinedanotherpartofthemilitarybranchbuthewasmorefamiliarwith
theNavybecauseofhisfather.HefeltthatbeingintheNavywouldbemorebeneficialthan
beingintheArmy.AlsotheNavyhadotheradvantagesincludingbetterfoodandabedtosleep
in.HisjobasanExplosiveOrdnanceDisposalOfficeralsopaidathirdmorethanaregular
officer.Jimwasintrigued,Itsoundedlikeitthatwouldbeaveryexcitingtypeofjob.
WhenJimfirstjoinedtheNavyin1961hewenttoO.C.S.,OfficerCandidateschool.He
wascommissionedasanEnsignwhichisthelowestofficerrankavailable.Whilehewasat
O.C.S.acoupleofrecruitersfromExplosiveOrdnanceDisposalschoolinIndianHead,
Marylandgaveapresentationtotheschool.Jimlikedthepresentationanddecidedtoenrollin
thatschool.Hereceivedhazardousdutypay,whichpaidathirdmorethanwhathewould
havebeenmaking.
Well,whenIwentthroughO.C.S,thatwasveryrigorous.Thatwasallday.Notimeto
takeabreak.Forfourmonths,JimtrainedatOfficerCandidateSchool.Jimhadalmostnotime
tohimself.Itwashoursofstudyingnavigation,engineering,seamanshipandleadership.
Disciplinewasabigpartoftrainingtoo.Alotofpeople,abouthalfdon'tmakeityouknow,you
gottareallyfightandbedeterminednottogiveup.WhenJimfinallygraduatedO.C.S.hewent
ontoExplosiveOrdnanceDisposalSchoolforayearandahalf.Afterthat,hewentto
underwaterswimschoolinKeyWest,Floridatobecomeadeepseadiver,wherehelearned
manythingssuchasthedifferencebetweenopencircuitandclosedcircuitdiving.Closedcircuit
meaningyoudontreleaseanybubblesandopencircuitmeaningbubblesarereleased.Closed
isforgoingaboutundetected.Thisalsorequiredbeingingoodphysicalshape,Itwasvery,
verystrenuousfromaphysicalstandpoint.AfterJimcompletedE.O.D.S,hespentayearatthe
NavalPropellerplantjustsouthofWashingtonD.C.,wheretheymadesolidrocketpropellent
andnitroglycerin.There,Jimwentthrougheverythingfromnuclearweaponstoimprovised
boobytraps,torpedoes,watermines,landmines,guidedmissilesandICBMs.Weweretaught
todisposeofallthosewarheads.
JimwasassignedtotheUSS
Intrepid
,aWWIIaircraftcarrier.Hisprimaryjobwasasan
ExplosiveOrdnanceDisposalOfficerandhissecondaryjobwastorunalltheordnanceon
boardtheshipandbecometheship'sgunnermaintainingallofthesmallarmsandweapons,
includingpistolsandrifles.Inaddition,Jimwasabletodrivetheshipwhenitwasnthavingflight
operations.
AfteracoupleofyearsJimwentbacktoschoolandwasassignedasaninstructor.He
startedinstructinginnuclearweapons.Bythetimeheleft,hehadbeenpromotedtodirectorof
theNuclearWeaponsDisposalSchool,thelargestcollectionofnuclearweapontrainingdevices
intheworld.Jimalsolearnedhowtoflyairplanesandbecameapilotwhileattheschool.He
resignedasalieutenantandsixmonthslater,joinedthereservesfor15years.After20yearsof
militaryservice,Jimretiredasacommander.
Ienjoyedmytimeinthemilitaryverymuch!InfactiswhenIdidresignandgointo
civilianlifeIwasprettymuchofalossbecauseyouhavesomuchauthorityandresponsibility
asayoungman.Iwastwentyfiveyearsoldanddrivinganaircraftcarrier!Youknowthatyou
don'tgetthatincivilianlife.JimretiredfromthereservesanddecidedtoworkforMorgan
Stanleyasaninvestmentperson.Hetaughtstockbrokershowtosellinitialpublicofferings
whenacompanygoespublic.Jimwentaroundthecountrydoingthissohetraveledalotduring
hisjob.
JimcontinueshisserviceontheUSSMidway,relayinghisexperienceinthenavytothe
manyvisitors.
