Lesson Plan

Revising and working on understanding the 3 Reading Powers

Learning Outcomes:
Students are able to revisit what they have learnt about
reading powers and how they can use these powers when
engaging with a text
Students are able to: make connections to the text,
understand some thick and thin question raised by the text
and are able to visualise different elements suggested from
the text
Learning Intentions:
We can recall the three reading powers and discuss them with
others
We can explore our reading powers after reading a text
Tuning in:
Talk partners what are reading powers? How many types are
there?
Discuss as the class the 3 reading powers, understanding
what they mean in relation to a text
* Making connections: text to self, text to text, text to world,
Questioning: thick and thin questions, Visualising: image in your
head.
Read aloud of Stanley Paste ask questions throughout, why
might Stanley hate being tall? Why do you think they are
getting along so well?
After read aloud, discuss the book in relation to the 3 reading
powers: can anyone make connections? What type of
connection is that? What do you think Stanley and Eleanor
have learnt? If you were a child in their class would you treat
them differently? What is it teaching us about our
relationships with other students at school? Why is that
important?
Activity:
Students will complete the worksheet (differentiated
according to ability level) quietly at their desk, some students
may need some individual help (prompting) in order to
complete the work
Points to remember:
Before going back to desks to complete the activity, double
check that students are confident about the 3 reading powers.
Seek out students who arent
Ask students what is expected of them

Read through learning intentions before asking students to go

to their desks
Behaviour management: (Name Student), you are interfering
with our right to learn/be safe by. Please stop

Pulling it together:
Intro, read aloud and discussion 15 mins (9:05- 9:20)
Working activity 25 mins (9:20 9:45)
Share time 5 mins (9: 45)
* Share time: Get students to come to the floor and discuss what
they have learnt. Who can tell me something that they have learnt
about reading powers? Or something special they discovered from
the text?
