Creation Myth - Norse
Origin
Norse religion originated in Scandinavia during Viking time
in the 13th century. Many and mostly all of believers in the
Norse religion were Vikings. A very small population of
people to this day still believe in the Norse religion.
Who
The first Nordic people were the
Vikings, and then the religion also became
more popular for northwestern Europeans. A
small number of people outside of these
regions also follow this religion.
Gods
The most important god Is Odin (meaning fury), Odin is the leader of all other
gods. He is the god of battle, wisdom, magic, and poetry. Odin was the ruler of
Valhalla which is his palace in the heavenly realm of Asgard. Warriors who died
in battle would be carried off to Valhalla by valkyries and given food and trained
for a final battle where the gods and earth were doomed. This final battle was
called,Ragnarok. There are many more gods all specified, such as Thor, the
god of storms who used his hammer to create storms. Mjlnir, Thors hammer,
was used in battles against the Jotuns, and such was heard as thunder.
Important Facts
The world was created from the remains of the giant Ymir.
Blood became oceans and water,
Flesh= land
bones = mountains,
Teeth = rocks
Hair = grass and trees.
Worms crawling out of Ymir became dwarves.
4 of the dwarves held up the sky.
The other dwarves became expert craftsmen and made weapons like Thors
hammer.
