How might prototyping be used as part of

the SDLC?
As mentioned earlier a prototype is like a model or a
simulation of a real thing. In systems analysis a
prototype is a model of the system (or subsystem)
under analysis. A system can be anything from the food
ordering system at a restaurant to the air traffic control
system of a major airport. Prototypes of these systems
can take many forms. They can be paper-based or
computer-based. They can model the entire system
with real data or just a few screens with sample data.
Prototyping is the part of feasibility analysis phase of
SDLC.

Prototype Model
When used as a part of the SDLC, it can help the analyst
1. Understand what the user wants.
2. able to make changes based on user needs,
3. See how well the changes work.
4. Provides a process to perfect the requirements
definition.
5. Prototype may be easily changed and even
discarded.
6.The software designer and implementer can
obtain feedback from the users early in the
project
7. The software designer and implementer can obtain
feedback from the users early in the project
8. It also allows the software engineer some
insight into the accuracy of initial project
estimates and whether the deadlines and
milestones proposed can be successfully met
When to use such model?
1.Prototyping is very effective in the analysis and
design of on-line systems.
2.Prototyping is especially good for designing
good human-computer interfaces. One of the

most productive uses of rapid prototyping to

date has been as a tool for iterative user
requirements engineering and humancomputer interface design.
