Structural Lightning Protection NEW Products 2007 Thomas&Betts snub ase (ey New products 23 Anew range of products, complying with BS EN 50164, are quicker and easier to install How to apply structural lightning protection a5 ‘A guide to applying the components required to produce an effective Lightning Protection system Lightning Protection 6-9 ‘ir rods, fixings, lamps and bonds including the NEW Adjustable DC tape clips and Crossover clamps Conductors 11-12 Bare, PVC and LSOH covered and tinned copper tape Earthing 13-16 Threaded copperbond earth rods, Earth inspection pits, clamps and bonds wwwFurse.com ‘06054 Contents 2 New products ‘With over 100 years history, Furse is a world leader in the design and manufacture of Earthing and Lightning Protection products. ‘Our highly experienced engineers and designers ensure that Furse is at the forefront of ing product innovation. Standards Previously, national Lightning Protection and Earthing standards only specified the material from which the components had to be manufactured. Recently introduced European standards now dictate stringent electrical and mechanical parameters that the components must adhere to. BS EN 50164-1:2000 Lightning Protection Components (LPC) Part 1: Requirements for Connection Components covers the material specifications and tests required for connection components to be used as part of a Lightning Protection System (LPS), NEW products To ensure compliance to the new standards, Furse have developed a range of components for use with copper and aluminium 25 x 3mm flat tape conductors. As well as conforming to the standards, the new products also have many features that make them easier to handle and install. {All new products can be identified by the letter ‘H’ forged into their base ~ signifying they are tested to BS EN 50164-1:2000 and are rated to 100kA. Air rod base (page 7) ‘The patented Air rod base is now @ two-piece clamp that has been designed to make installation of the tape faster and easier. Previously, once fixed to the surface, the tape had to be fed through each {Air rod base in turn, The base of the new component is first installed on ‘the surface, then the tape is laid out on top and finally the lid is twisted into position, The Air terminal is screwed into the Air rod base and down on to the conductor, Installation of tape has never been easier due to the two-piece design DC tape clip (page 7) A patented clip with a unique one-piece construction. The lid is incorporated into the base by means of a rotating rivet-type mechanism, This allows the lid to be swung out of the way when installing the base to the surface, then swung back into place to secure the conductor without the risk of dropping the lid A patented clip with a unique one-piece construction New products www-furse.com Adjustable DC clip (page 7) This patented design allows great flexibility. The two-piece body accepts different widths of tape and the lid design means tape of either 3mm or ‘6mm depth can be installed using the same clip, 3mm or 6mm tape can be installed using the same clip Crossover clamp (page 8) This new clamp, a registered design, holds the tape in place in an X configuration when installing a Faraday Cage grid on to a roof. The retained screws in the lid mean installation is quicker and easier. New clamp holds the tape in place in an X configuration Square tape clamp (page 9) A registered design, the new Square tape clamps are used to hold tape in place in a T of L configuration when installing a Faraday Cage Lightning Protection grid on to a roof or for holding large tapes for power earthing. The retained screws mean installation is quicker and easier than before. Retained screws in the lid mean installation is quicker and easier Oblong test or junction clamp (page 9) Now a two-piece clamp, this registered design allows conductor to be installed quickly and easily. Tape no longer needs to be fed through the clamp ~ the base of the clamp is fixed in position, the tape put in place and the lid is bolted to the base to firmly hold the conductor. Two-piece design — tape no longer needs to be fed through the clamp wwww-urse.com New products How to apply structural lightning protection Down conductor network ‘The down conductor system is the means of carrying the current of a lightning strike safely to the earth ‘termination network. Select the correct sytem of fixings for each pat of the conductor system Pings are available fora a Wide range of modern Construction materials, eg brick, By Stone lastic and metal ation network stion network is the point of connection for a lightning strike. It typically consists of a meshed ‘conductor arrangement covering the roof of the structure, Air terminals [7] se air terminals in the form of vertical air rods for the protection | of prominent roof top features or equipment. Use strike pads to connect and thus expose concealed fy | conductors. i Choose the correct air rod bese. This will ensure that the vertical air rods are both solidly fixed to the fabric of the structure and have a low resistance connection to the gy] conductor network How to apply structural lightning protection Conductor jointing clamps Select a component for the interconnection of multiple conductors or for changes of direction. Jointing clamps will ensure a low resistance, corrosion resistant connection. Test clamps In order to allow periodic disconnection and testing of the earth termination network, select a test clamp to be placed within the run of each down conductor. Earth electrodes Choose an earth electrode to suit ‘the ground conditions in the locality of the structure. Electrodes are available in the form of rods and plates (lattice or solid) www furse.com l L J Earth termination network Earth rod clamps Select a high copper content alloy earth rod clamp for the connection of the earthing conductor to the earth rod. In this below ground application, the clamp must ensure @ good electrical contact and resist corrosion throughout the lifetime of the installation. Earth inspection pits Select an earth inspection pit to protect the earth electrode connections. High strength pits are available in plastic and concrete. Bonding Bonding is the most commonly employed method of avoiding the damaging effects of side flashing. All continous metalwork should be considered for bonding. All metallic services, eg cable armouring, gas, water or steam piping, entering the building should also be bonded as directly as possible to the earth termination network. The flat tape system is easy Furse manufacture and supply flat tape conductors in copper or alumi for to install, with no need to straighten the tape for a neat finish. Furse typically provides tape cost effective transportation and easier handling. Flat tape conductors can be installed bare, tinned or with @ PVC covering. Six standard colours are available, with others on request, to enable the tape to blend with modern building fabrics Tinned copper tape is available for applications that require additional protection measures. Copper braid is also available for use where flexibility is necessary, eg on moving installations like gates or doors.
