thewellintentionedglobalmovetowardsorganicstandardswillmakesmallorganicfarmersincountries
likeIndia,whohaveneverdoneanythingbutorganicfarming,nolongerabletoselltheircrops.
Inresponsetothe$26billionglobalmarketfororganicfoods,theIndianCentralGovernmentsetupa
NationalInstituteofOrganicFarminginOctober2003.Thepurposeofthisinstituteistoformulaterules,
regulationsandcertificationoforganicfarmproductsinconformitywithinternationalstandards.The
institutehasitsofficesacrossthecountryandhasappointedcertifyingagenciesfororganicfarm
productsforthedomesticmarket.Thecertifyingagenciesareaccountableforconfirmingthatany
productsoldwiththenewIndiaOrganiclogoisinaccordancewithinternationalcriteria,andlaunch
majorawarenessandmarketingcampaignsinIndiaandabroad.
Organicfarminghasbeenidentifiedasamajorthrustareaofthe10thplanofthecentralgovernment.1
billionrupeeshavebeenallocatedtotheaforementionedNationalInstituteofOrganicFarmingalone
forthe10thfiveyearplan.Despitethis,mostofIndiasorganicfarmsarenotofficiallyconsidered
organic.MostofIndiasfarmsareorganicbydefault.Theironyanddifficultyofthenewgovernmental
pushfororganicagricultureisthat65%ofthecountryscroppedareaisorganicbydefault,according
toastudy.Bythissomewhatdegradingtermtheymeanthatsmallfarmers,locatedmostlyinthe
EasternandNorthEasternregionsofthecountry,havenochoiceexcepttofarmwithoutchemical
fertilizersorpesticides.Thoughthisistrueinmanycases,itisalsotruethatasignificantnumberof
themhavechosentofarmorganically,astheirforefathershavedoneforthousandsofyears.Manyhave
